My name is Mookje and I’m 48 years old. I’m playing the fiddle for 6 months now. Wow, what a great adventure it is, but it’s not easy. Actually, it’s quit difficult. I think this forum would be very helpful to learn things and I’m really curious about other people playing this beautiful instrument.

Hi Mookje,
Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty new too and everyone has been terrific. I'm sure we're all super curious as to what brought you to the violin at the tender age of 48 It happened to me when my 30 year old son spotted my grandmother's old violin collecting dust in a storage closet.
Have you noticed that you can upload videos of yourself playing? You'll get lots of pats on the back... but also some really good, constructive feedback. It's intimidating, for sure, but well worth taking the plunge.
Best,
Holly (from South Florida)

Thanks Holly ? I always loved the sound of the violin but thought that this was to difficult for me. When I was a child I played the accordeon and the last few years I only played percussion, Udu and Zenkodrum. This year I thought, it’s now or never ? and I bought a violin. And I’m so happy with it!
I have to figure out how to place videos, I do recording myself to see and hear my progress! I think it’s good to get feedback, you can learn from it a lot!

Mookje, I'm not sure how the others handle video posting but I just created a Youtube Channel, uploaded my video and then hyperlinked it to the message I was posting. Let us know if that doesn't work for you. I'm sure another member will chime in with better instructions.
I love the 'now or never' philosophy

@mookje Hello and welcome! I too am a late learner, and have been playing and learning violin for about 3 years now. It is definitely not easy, but that is what makes it so satisfying. This is a great site, with some very good resources and super people behind it. I know you will learn lots here.

Hello @mookje
You are in Holland?? Awesome! I have never been there. I am in the US. I have been playing violin for 4.5 months now. I love everything about violin. Like you, I started late in my life. I began music as a child in drums and learned percussion. I have played in orchestras but I always wanted to play music with notes. This year I made the decision to begin violin and I have been so happy with it!
Your original question was how other people play it. Well I have private lessons and I practice every day. So far, I am working with my teacher and moving along at a steady pace. At 4 months, I am still working on 1st position fingering and I have started with some kinds of bowing other than straight bow, such as staccato and hooked bow. When I began, I didn't even read on a staff with notes. Now I am reading in keys and playing the notes on a staff like normal. I will soon complete my first beginning book one.
I do find fiddlerman.com very helpful and everyone on this forum is quite welcoming. It is a great place to ask questions and learn more about violins.
Have fun on your journey with your violin!

Hi and welcome to the forum! This will surely be a good place to get feedback on your playing. I hope you'll continue to find it satsifying to learn this instrument! Are you taking lessons or are you teaching yourself ??
I am pretty new myself to the violin, at the end of this month it'll be 1 year for me. (started at 31 years old) Although I lost 6 weeks of practice in march/april due to jaw surgery. And July was absolutely impossible when it came to practice, too damn hot! Couldn't move a muscle without melting away, make it hard to focus. As it's cooled off a bit here in Sweden now I am hoping to get back to a regular daily practice routine. My last lesson was in May, then my teacher doesn't work over summerbreak as it's a university. She started me off with 3rd position so that is what I've been working on since then. It is quite frustrating to have gotten better tone in 1st position, and then go back to the scratches and squeels when trying to do 3rd.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing some of your videos!

@Pete_Violin Nice to read about your musical story and the new violin adventure! And great that you also play percussion. I play the Zenkodrum and a little bit Udu. I really love those instruments but sometimes I don’t have the inspiration or the creativity to play. There is no sheet music for those instruments so you always have to make your own music. And sometimes I just wanna play sheet music ?
Lots of fun for you to on your yourney ?
