Hello From Mississauga!
I am an adult beginner that started my violin journey during this pandemic. Before I started this journey, I couldn't read any music, or play a note. Now I know the staff and fingers are landing where they should (at least for simple music) so I'm making baby steps.
My day job is software development, so after a day of coding, sometimes endless meetings and mentoring junior developers, a hour or so of practice is therapeutic! And thank goodness for mutes, so I don't disturb my apartment neighbours!
Previously, 12 years in the CAF, postings all over Canada and Bosnia.
I am really excited to see how far I can go with the violin. Will I be as good as 'Fiddlerman'? We'll see!
John

@ELCBK et al: How'd you know I was just a lowly Air Force Captain in a previous life? (CAF stands for Canadian Armed Forces)
I really like the "Fiddlerman" 'Song of the week" arrangements. My teacher is a Suzuki/Royal Conservatory of Music teacher and that means so far, just using the A and E strings. (Yup that much of a beginner), so I've been working through some of 'Song of the week's' arrangements. With Pierre's arrangements of songs, there's a few songs that use D and G (Star Wars comes to mind). My teacher has been more than accommodating with me trying these songs, as a matter of fact she's been encouraging it.
I was trying to plan a trip to Florida to pick up an Fiddlerman Soloist (as an upgrade to my VSO - google maps says Fiddlershop is 20 minutes from Fort Lauderdale airport) - I mean who here wouldn't like to bump into Michael O'G and say "Hi and Thank you" for all the videos he's done that we've watched, but with the bureaucracy at the border and the Canadian/American dollar difference nothing has fallen into place so I decided to buy local. Still have to figure out a good reason to visit their shop.
It's a long weekend up here (Sept 4 - 6), I think it is in the States, so enjoy your long weekend!!!
John

@JohnG:
Thank you. Mississauga is changing. It's getting really cosmopolitan. I am in the southern part, and it's nice and quiet.
Viola, huh? Why did you pick viola? Are you taking lessons or are you self learning? I was originally going to see how far I could get by myself, but as I indicated, my sister's friend and I are zoom learning.

Welcome to the forum! I’m playing 8 years now—took it up shortly after retiring from USAF (worked in what they’re calling cyber systems ops now).
I did the first 2 years on my own, & then the last 6 years I’ve been taking weekly lessons. You’re in long enough now that you’re probably hooked. Other people might think you’re crazy, but that’s okay—enjoy the journey!
Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.
