Greetings you people!

Newbie speaking. I'm 23-yo sunny and energetic, easygoing tomboy girl from the Land of Ice and Snow, Northern Lights, Thousand Lakes, Midnight Sun.. you name it. To be brief: I'm from Finland.

I'm learning to play a violin and I've been playing it no longer than for a few months now. In the beginning of my journey I had a teacher, but after moving to another town, I no longer had a change to have a teacher.. Now I've been trying to find sites which I could use to support my learning, and that's pretty much the point when I ended up here. Thanks for the most awesome site! In spite of my high starting age, I'm really eager and willing to learn how to play a violin, and I wanna prove people wrong, who say, that it's impossible to learn to play an intrument as difficult as violin at this age.

I really enjoy playing the violin, even though I'm not so good at it, just yet.. But practice makes perfect, right? amuse So, let's help one another. I know I will need LOTS of help, tips and pointers on my journey on becoming a decent violinist. It's also fun to get to know new people, so if you got some spare time and wanna have a chat, don't hesitate to say hi.

Cheers~ ♪♫

Welcome, Felia!  You've come to the right place.  I will be 30 in a few weeks and there are plenty of people older than us on here who are just beginning as well -- it's NEVER too late to learn something new or enjoy music. So, you are definitely not alone.   :)

But where are my manners^^ I am Aleksander, I am 21 years old. I am the one you'll find lurking the forums coming with redundant and/or stupid and/or factually incorrect comments. If I by any chance give out actual facts, it is through pure luck and educated guesswork. I have played the violin for about a month, however I have played other instruments since age 6, whereof most of them has been stringed instruments.

I started out with guitar. Moved on to percussion at 10. From there I jumped over to the place inbetween and got my fretless bass at age 13. At this point I also picked up cello and piano. I spend half the week slothing around with my music. The other half pretending to work. I also attend school, but that is of tertiary importance. ^^ I recommend joining the chat if you have any quick questions to ask the user-base, and of course everyone'd be happy to answer your questions on the forums^^

Again. We are very happy and privileged to have you here. And I do think I speak for everyone when I wish you a very warm welcome to the forums^^

Hiya again, and thank you both for the warm welcome. I'm glad to meet other "older" beginners and find that I'm not totally alone. It's somehow encouraging. :) You are totally right, sdslayer, that it's never too late, never!

Ahaa! My dear neighbor. Toodeloo to you too, Aleksander. I'm more than happy to be here, and if all the people here are as nice as the two of you, I think you'll see me hanging around here for a while. ^^

You have some musical background there, wow. So many instruments.. :D I tried to play a guitar when I was in senior high, but that wasn't my cup of tea. And fortunately now, after a few years, I totally found my label. And for you to know, it's not Lipton. tongue

Thanks for the advice, I joined the chat. Sooo, I think I'll be hollering something (either some nonsense or pleas for help..) there from time to time, too.

It's a blast to meet you guys and thank you, again, for the warm welcomes. They were totally more pleasant than the climate up here at the moment. :'D Warmer, at least..

Nonsense is always greatly appreciated. I went to Finland once. Not only did I think I was in Siberia, Russia (Been there, done that, never again.). However I watched (listened to, actually) two concerts. I was young and dumb and for some reason into Children of Bodom. I also hooked in on a The Rasmus concert.

While risking sounding rather improper I must say that tomboy Finnish women are the best, as my experience is that the most feminine are in fact, male. Though there was not a single displeasing individual in sight. So I had a blast.

I must say I prefer the cold weather in Finland to the cold hearts of Norway :)

Phew, what a relief! Since one of my bad habits is the endless blabbering. :D No need to worry about that, then.

It's true, that it's FREEZING cold here in winters, but I don't mind. I actually like when it's so cold that your hair and eyelashes freeze and you get rosy cheeks. ^^ I guess I'm a bit defferent from most of the Finnish people, but no can do. I'm from North. :D But on the other hand, summers are hot as hel.. eh.. campfire. embarassed It's nice that we've got cold, snowy winters and warm, sunny summers. Though, last summer was maybe even too hot for me.. So, for people to know: it's not always just cold, ice, snow and darkness in Finland. We don't live in igloos and we do not have penguins as pets.. amuse Some people did ask me those things, once.. I've never been a huge fan of either one of those bands, but I know that there are massive quantities of fans out there.

It's really nice to hear that you liked the people here. I think so too, that we have nice people here, especially in the North. And no need to worry about sounding improper or anything. It's fun to hear people's thoughts. ^^ And yeah.. I've never been a girly girl, with skirts and high heels, polished nails and hairdos. I've always preferred sneakers and my old, worn jeans. I don't mind getting dirty, I love motorbikes and I do boxing. :D That's what you get when you up with a bunch of guys.. ^^

Hmh.. I always wanted to do boxing. But with one usable hand, and with one eye I  was at a serious disadvantage. Being cruiser-class and all. I did however excel in aikido and hapkido. 2nd dan in both, where I specialized with long staff, knives and unarmed as far as hapkido goes. I later found that these two martial arts were my true callings. So I was glad I didn't go through with boxing. Put that is subjective preference at its best. Nowadays I do music, or meditate on if I should do some work or not. Or meditate, period. I do train from time to time, but it is hard finding sparring partners here. As the tae kwon do-club here is hilariously bad. And the goju-ryu style of karate is very straightforward and predictable. And unless I exploit boxers tendency of not being prepared for kicks etc. They beat the snot out of me. So there is nothing in between :'(

As far as clothing goes. Jeans, t-shirt, sneakers, and on a bad day a jacket is the way to go!

And yeah. I don't listen to them anymore. It was catchy as a kid. Nothing more.

P.S. The only reason my fiancee cannot beat me to a pulp, despite me being proficient in various martial arts. Is that I can outrun her. It makes for some hilarious moments. I hid a faux spider in the sugar container once. I actually ended up fleeing to the rooftop.

Anyway! The chat is calling me!~

Hey Saija,

Welcome to the forum. As many have said above, your age is nothing. What can make you a good violinist is devotion, hard work, enjoyment of what you are doing, motivation, and talent.....

We actually have some members in their 70's that just began and every imaginable age between as well. Members here are great at motivating each other. Feel free to post your progress here as others do as a partial replacement for not having a teacher. We can give you tips and advice.
Members here are kind and helpful.

I have spent a lot of time in Finland. My wife is Finish Swedish but born in Solna, Sweden. Both of her parents born in Finland. We had some summer cabins there. One on an island called "Emsalo" and another on an island called "Notholmen" off of Korpo. The first one we took over from her dad but gave it to the family for lack of finding time to visit. The second one I built during my summer vacation from my concertmaster job in Gavle, on an island in which most in Asa's family owned some land.
Of course I built a super Finnish sauna in it as well. smile

Many great memories from Finland not to mention a couple cool gigs there too.

Hello, welcome, come in, pull up a fiddle.

If only I'd started at 23, I would have gotten twinkle twinkle down for sure by now!

Hey again, and thank you all for the nice messages and welcomes!

It's awesome to see that this site contains some really wonderful people. :) It's also good and heartening to see that there really are a bunch of people who've started playing violin not as a kid, but at older age like me. I do, too, think that age is just a number. The most important thing, that really matters is what's on the inside. And like Pierre said, we just need to work really hard, be devoted and motivated, and of course have fun while practicing, and we'll do just fine. The fact that you all are here to help one another, is really a great thing. If I have some hard time on some parts or need tips and help, I won't hesitate to ask. Thank you all for your support! amuse And of course if there's any way I can help you guys, I'll do my best to return the favor.

Oh, it's cool that you know so much about Finland, Pierre. :D I know Emsalo (Emäsalo in Finnish). It's a part of Borgå (Porvoo in F). And that Notholmen isn't far from where I live atm. I've never visited the place, though.. But I've seen some nice pictures of it, and I think it's a really beautiful place. Hahaa! A sauna! :DD Of course it's a must have when you build a cabin here. How do you like the Finnish sauna culture, by the way (I'm sure that your wife has taught you lots of different things about Finnish and Swedish cultures)? Getting used to it? :) I couldn't live without sauna, to be honest. But that's only because it's been an important part of my life, like.. like, always. If you'll be having gigs here in the future, be sure to inform me! It would be a blast to see you play in person.

Hahhah, ok, ok.. I really start to believe, that maybe I'm not that old, after all. ^^

Thanks for the welcomes, Terry. And don't worry about your Finnish language skills. I guess you're not the only one with no Finnish vocabulary. tongue But hey! I guess I can fix that pretty easily. From now on, you guys can - for example - introduce yourselves like this: "Hei, minun nimeni on *Saija*. Olen viulisti." (Hey, my name is *insert your name here*. I'm a violinist.) There you go. And now, everyone can speak Finnish! Hooray! \o/

Yup. That's simple, easy and cost - effective.

I thought that might happen, so I used the stars for clarification. It would be no cool if everyone would be called by name as dull as Saija. facepalm
