I've had an account for this website for awhile now but I only received my violin yesterday so I guess I'll introduce myself now. (:
I'm Alexia, I'm a 15 year-old girl from Canada. I know how to play the piano so I have a general background in music.
I've always liked the violin but never thought of playing it myself. Until about 2 weeks ago when I had a dream that I played Ave Maria on the violin. When I woke up it was all I could think about so I started researching violins. After about a week, I picked the Cecilio cvn-colour. I got my violin yesterday and started playing it. I know I'm quite a long way from playing Ave Maria but it's definitely one of my goals. I know I'm not that great, but I already love the sound of the violin and the feeling of playing it.
Since yesterday I have learned Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Jingle Bells. Of course I can't play them perfectly, but it's a start.
I'm not really sure if I'm taking classes yet. My mom said she'll look for some but if they are too expensive I guess I'm on my own for this. All the classes in my area are atleast a dollar a minute (yikes! the pain of living in Toronto)
So anyway, I'm happy I found this site. It's very welcoming and I'm looking forward to growing and playing the violin with you all. (:

Hello from Florida.
start with FM fingering chart pdf, a tuner and his instruction videos for finding natural notes on each string. Once you have got great intonation and bowing skills (about a month from now) then start playing songs. Theres a starting point in learning and most people skip over it to play songs. After about a week of practicing the basics your ability to play those tunes will be greatly increased. Focus on tone! Also, post video updates and the rest of us will help you along. Welcome and enhoy your journey!

Thanks everyone! (:
And thanks for the advice picklefish. I wasn't really sure where to start so I just started using the "first lessons" book that came with my violin. (A chromatic tuner also came with my violin too)
I'll start with tone then. (: (Sorry family! ahah)
Also about the videos, I'll probably post once a month starting next month. I'd like to see my progression as well.

Hi Alexia!
I am SURE you will do fine on your own!! You're already playing! You must have a GOOD EAR! That is awesome.
There is some GREAT stuff posted here. I hope you watch every fiddlerman.com video a hundred times until you memorize every little thing - how he holds the bow, how he pulls it across the strings, how he stands... I mean NIT PICK it. Good stuff that should get you going!!
Warm welcome from Denver, CO

Warm welcome, Alexia, from West Coast, US.
You will definitely like it here, and learn a lot from other nice members.
It's great to know that you're fulfilling your dream in your young age.
Just as Pickfish and other advises, start from the beginning and work your scale, intonation, bowing control etc. Once you get the basics down then it will be much easier to play your favorite songs.
I've been doing it for 5 months, no songs, but you will probably get it down faster than I do.
Best wishes,
Robert

Here in my town is 90US$ a hour (185$ reais) T_T there's a few violin professors here and because of the price I am sure that I will not be able to take classes =/
But I'm happy that you are already playing songs!
Big welcome from Brazil!
