Hi, all...I'm a brand new player. So new I don't even have a fiddle yet. I'll be getting one second hand next month, I think.
I am an experienced musician: 12 yrs of piano, played flute in high school and college, picked up the mountain dulcimer almost 2 years ago. I've toyed around with other instruments, too: bassoon, piccolo, bass drum (marching band had too many flutes!), coronet, clarinet and pennywhistle. I currently play piano at church and dulcimer with two local clubs. Planning to go to Bennington, OK this weekend for Winter Creek.
The violin has always fascinated me, especially as it is used in bluegrass, Irish, and country music. Being a perpetual student and always up for a learning challenge, I decided that I wanted to learn to play. So here I be!
This morning I mentioned to my kids that I was on a learn-to-play-the-violin forum and three of them said that they wanted to learn to play! This could be a problem...
Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching the videos and picking up tips from the forum. I'll record my progress on video and try to share occasionally. I do appreciate constructive criticism and advice! My intent is mostly to become good enough to enjoy making music with others, not to be a virtuoso.
See you on the boards!

Welcome! Texas has a very rich fiddle tradition. I think you are mining a very rich vein and wish you great success. Getting the kids involved is a huge win for them. I would counsel doing whatever you can to make them part of your musical experience. I did that with my kids and I can say with no reservations that whatever you put in with them is returned to you ten-fold.

Howdy and Welcome. I just joined yesterday and everyone has been so nice. Where in Texas? My husband is from the Longview area and his parents and brother are their now.
Sounds like you have a lot of musical experience so this should be a breeze for you.....
'Tis a gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free
'Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

I live about 45 minutes north of Longview. Moved here from Austin in 2000.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a fun family!
Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

Hi, Luv2Learn! Welcome to the forum!
Why do You think this is a problem that kids want to play? Too many violins You'll have to get XD? On the other hand you'll be able to learn and jam together! That will be fun! I'd love if someone in my family wanted to play violin or any other instrument... =)
