Welcome to the Fiddlerman Forum!
Always nice to meet another fiddler beginner my age.
What a beautiful, achievable goal!
Maybe set your sight on something special for next Christmas?
It's great you have been able to start with lessons.
Your Violin sounds wonderful, have you given it a name?

Hello. Steve here. Retired in western North Carolina. I'm a 65 year old beginner. Purchased a German Markneukirchen violin roughly 100 years old and have had two formal classical lessons so far. My aim is to be able to play some hymns with my wife who plays flute.
Welcome @SEHatfield
Where in NC? My brother lives in Asheville. It's beautiful out there.
Your goals seams very much in reach. What is your teacher having you do so far?
Hey Fiddlerman! I live 2 hours West of Asheville in Murphy, a little town. In 2 lessons she's teaching me bow and violin holds, and practicing long bows on open strings. She teaches the franco-belgian bow hold adjusted to my hand size. Had to take a break because she had a family emergency so only 2 lessons so far.
I do have a question though. I bought an approximately 100 yr old German cottage industry Markneukirchen violin for $450 and a $160 generic carbon fiber bow. My teacher likes wooden bows. I've been looking at your Holstein pernambuco and your Holstein 1 star pernambuco as well as the DZStrad 600 series pernambuco. I'm not close to a shop but kinda wanted to see if I liked a wooden bow. I'm a beginner but not to music and play acoustic guitar. What are your thoughts? Thanks much
Steve

Emily I've decided to name her "Ilsa."
