Hello,

I never have done one of these introduction forum posts, but I figure it would be a great place to start when trying to join this new community.  I am just beginning to learn the violin last week, and I've already mastered Cat's Screeching in A Minor :D

I used to play guitar and bass guitar almost 20 years ago.  I have always loved the violin, and I have finally decided to stop being disappointed that I never picked it up.  Besides, who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?  I just turned 30, and I figured I have enough discipline and that my life has settled down enough to be able to have the time to devote to learning this instrument.  For work, I am a programmer, and I pretty much dedicate my time to my work.  Other than working, my only other hobby is sailing, and I figure I could use a hobby that I can do whenever I want (and especially in my own home!).  Besides, I can't wait to do moonlight sails and play my violin out on the water.  Talk about an amazing and peaceful experience.

I am currently borrowing a violin from a friend (who sadly hasn't touched in in almost 10 years), and I'll be looking at getting my first violin from the fiddlershop here this week.

I've been looking online at a lot of websites that offer good resources for learning, and have a strong community.  Fiddlerman.com seems to be the best in my opinion.  Not only does Pierre have amazing skill, but he is very genuine and caring and interacts with the community.  I wish I started this adventure a while ago, as I only live a couple hours from his shop, and would have loved to meet him.  Unfortunately, my work is moving me to California in 2 weeks :/

I look forward to a long and prosperous experience here with the community!

Unfortunately, my better half has hated my practice sessions, but here's a picture of Dusty when he's not listening to me play (he always gets introduced whenever I do hehe)

@Matthew - WELCOME aboard Matthew !   You will never be short of inspiration and assistance here.   Check out ( I assume you have ) the FM tuition videos and beginners sheet etc....   a wealth of knowledge to be found !   Never hesitate to ask questions, even if they sound "silly to you at the time" ( they are not - often it is just a tiny bit of clarification that's needed and suddenly - enlightenment ! LOL - this has happened to me a number of times over the last year or so ! )

Above all, enjoy you journey with the violin !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

D'oh !   I had read Matthew's intro about playing under sail - what with that and the International Talk Like a Pirate Day thing in my head ( the Good Ship FiddlerMan ) - must have been a subliminal thought process occurring between brain and fingers!  LOL Kiara !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Welcome, Matthew.

If you can do Cat's Screeching in A minor, you're doing very well - I can only do that one in A major!

Welcome from a fellow newbie! I just started playing last week, too. I'm finding online tutorials like Fiddlerman so helpful.

I also got my violin from  Fiddlerman. The set up and quality is great, and so helpful for a new player.

Welcome from a third beginner! Just started here myself too. The support, friendliness, warmth and knowledge here is quite incredible.

Best of luck, and what a lovely dog you have!

Hey Matthew,

"Cats Screeching in A Minor" sounds like a great piece to master so quickly. ;)

Reminds me of some of the contemporary stuff we had to play in orchestras back in the day. LOL

The teaching old dogs new tricks saying doesn't apply here. We defy the rules and old dogs learn new tricks all the time here, besides, 30 is more like teaching a puppy.
I'm really happy to hear that you are a sailer, what do you sail? Do you race or cruise?
We have a Island Packet, IP31 that we sail as often as possible. I can't think of a better hobby.

thumbs-up

Where exactly do you live? I would love to get together with you. Bring your fiddle by Fiddlershop ASAP, before you get moved to California and we'll have a look at it. There is a lot that we can do to improve sound. I'll even donate a nice thick practice mute to keep your better half happy. :)
