Welcome to the forum. I am sure that you have noticed that these guys are very welcoming and helpful. I played WAY back in elementary-freshman year of high school and stopped. I am trying to relearn so much without lessons, as I live in the sticks and there aren't many here. My belief is that many of the great old time fiddlers were self-taught as well. Where there is passion, there is a way. Keep at it and lets hear ya!

Welcome to the forum.I will say that I've heard some pretty talented fiddlers/violinists that are self taught and my guess is that the biggest hurdle would be to maintain discipline.
If a person cannot afford a teacher, its more of a hurdle providing you have the right attitude. With that attitude you can go far.
Yeah discipline is definitely a big thing and struggle at times. Sometimes I am hyper focused on my practices and practice every single day sometimes I’ll have a week or so where I don’t touch it either instrument and then when I get back into it I’m a bit rusty. I’m trying to find that balance of practicing often enough but not so often that I’m burned out of the instruments.

I agree! Not everybody had a teacher, someone had to start somewhere and figure it out along the way.

Hello! My name is Niki and I have had a violin for the past two or three years but have only really played for about six months consecutively. I do not have a tutor at the moment which is lousy and especially hard to find right now with COVID-19 going on.I am doing what I can to improve finger placement and tone as well as training my ear to the proper notes and limiting the bad habits that may develop or may have developed. I am also learning the cello in a similar fashion and I have had that for just under a year.
Hello, do you live in Cheshire England, if so check out Ed Alain Johnson in Chester town centre he is an excellent violinist who is reduced to busking on the streets he is always in the centre every Saturday, pleased to meet you.
Cant beat a sunny day
