I am have been playing my violin for about 4 months. All self taught with Youtube as my majority instructor and a few pointers from a "retired" Luthier I bumped into literally. He gave me enough of a background to "rosin my bow" and i been playing horribly ever since.

Just last monday, I had my first lesson from a 1 on 1 instructor and have weekly 1/2 hour sessions now. I found out, unfortunately, there are alot of ways you are not supposed to play a violin, hold a bow, rosin a bow, tighten bow hairs and several other things. Good for me, I was renting a very inexpesive grade-C noise maker  until a few weeks ago.

I recently purchased a new violin.  I ventured to again bother my Luthier "friend". He directed me in what I should avoid and even made a call for me and now I have my own... albiet new, violin. I have a Paulo Lorenzo Feb 2012. It has Witnner tuners (4) and D'addario Zyex strings. I hope to wear this baby out before I retire.

I tend to practice about 2 hours a day and I read everything I can get my hands on. I think I know alot more then most beginners do to what I read. Technical aspects from the Guild of American Luthiers and other informative guides and pamphlets. I do understand (physics background) why and how they work, vibrations/harmonics and resonance. I just need to MAKE it dance for me now. (I think I'm a long way from it dancing. It's more like still trying to figure out where its feet are)

Anyways, Thats me. High energy running with my hair on fire until I hit a gasoline drum. Then, its chaos for weeks.

Welcome, x_Ty.

Sound's as if you have a good hold of what you want to accomplish.  Keep it up.

You mentioned, before you retire, that could be 1 year or 50.  dunno

Welcome, Tyberius! Nice introduction!

That sounds pretty good:

What I saw last night, the help people were giving new players, even to the point of downloading web cam shots to assist another person. You just don't see that too much nowadays. I do believe you will eventually get tired of me trolling around, asking the same question you all already replied to a zillion times but, doing it again for my benefit..

This looks like a great place to be at any level of ability. I look forward to my skills and techniques growing and building. Who knows, When I'm old and grey .. check that, I'm already old and grey.. When I'm OLDER and GREYER, maybe I'll be one of you knowledgeable palyers replying to the "young" string screaching player who loves to hold the violin finger board like its a louisville slugger. blink

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi Fiddlerman

Thanks for providing us - me, this place as a musical haven. Those training videos are great as are the step by step pointers. Had it not been for the "We will Rock you" youtube video, I would never have found your site. The click here in the text under the video. It only took about 2 hours of watching the chat window and reading what you have compiled here to hook me.

I hope to be around here until you shut off the lights or until you ban me for yammering on about some sort of nonsense. crossedfingers  lol

uhm, yea.. Look, a shooting star!!!  (walks away rapdily) wink
