I was instructed by Mouse to introduce myself, and Mouse does not seem like someone to be trifled with, so I am complying.

Not much to say, here's my first post if you're interested in the gritty details:

Aw, @New2Viola, You can trifle! 😂😂😂😂

I have enjoyed your posts. I am so pleased you are so active and I hope we can provide you with the encouragement needed to keep you on track with your "new to you" lovely viola. What a wonderful gift.

Many here have also come from a guitar background -

what kind of music are you interested in?

I mainly play 70's and 80's rock on electric guitar: Beatles, Dire Straits, Southern Rock, Rolling Stones, Clapton and so on.

On acoustic guitar, I like Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles, James Taylor, Jack Johnson, Cold Play, Milow, etc.

I've never been interested in classical music, but I like the sound of the stringed instruments in songs like these:

@New2Viola -

I have similar tastes, plus I like a little of everything else. 🎃

Enjoyed those 2 videos!

Just wanted to let you know that when you browse around on the forum you'll find great info, tutorials and play-along sheet music for Viola amongst everything for violin.  Anything the Violin plays on the A, D & G strings, or whatever a Cello plays an octave lower is also fair game for Viola.

I look at music & think, "now how can I make that cool on the Viola".

Are you familiar with reading the different clefs, or have you learned music more by ear?

...not trying to overwhelm you.

I play rock music by ear, but I played trombone throughout high school, so I have a basic ability to read music, albeit at a snail's pace. Most guitar solos I transcribe into TAB, which might be difficult for viola, since there are no fret markers.

@New2Viola -

That's GREAT news, you're already 10 steps ahead, then!

I learn mostly by ear.  Reading scores is slow for me, too - I always think treble clef first, which slows me down.

It's really great you have a teacher to help you learn to use your bow, bowing hand & elbow properly!

Once you get acquainted with bowing straight & general left hand finger placement - there ARE animated Viola Tab Tutorials to have a little fun with on YouTube, usually presented at normal & half speed (with custom slow down in video settings).

For example:

There are also plenty of animated VIOLIN Tabs that may seem easier to start with - tunes that only use the A, D & G strings, so also great for VIOLA, e.g., "Mad World" by Gary Jules, or "Believer" by Imagine Dragons (Fiddling with my Whistle).

...many Viola tunes are available as play-along sheet music, too.

Have fun!
