Library Ireland has "A History of Irish Music", published in 1905, written by William H. Grattan Flood - online to read for free. 

Everything in the Table of Contents is linked, so you can easily skip around between Chapters. 

What caught my attention - Chapter IV. Ancient Irish Scales!

Found a great little timeline of The History of Irish Dance at the Celtic Steps site. 

 

Anyone ever see Celtic Steps when they've been on tour?

Ran across Dr. Martin Dowling's book, "Traditional Music and Irish Society: Historical Perspectives".  Not new (2015?) and this one's not free (avail on amazon, etc...) - but seems to pick up where others left off.

Anyway, to launch the book he did a series of videos!  

 

Chapter 2.) Foundations of a Modern Tradition - 'Traditional Music and Irish Society: Historical Perspectives' with Robbie Hannan.  

 

Chapter 3.) Music in The Revival: The Feis Ceoil, The Gaelic League, and The Pipers - performances by Thalia & Breandan O'Hare, Una Monaghan & Lorraine Ni Bhriain.
