🤔... so that's how they play strathspeys in Denmark!

...just kidding - I really like them.

LOVE their "Lady Hamilton Dalrymple"

Robert Mackintosh was composing tunes before James Scott Skinner (the Strathspey King) was around so, unlike Skinner, there's no recordings of Mackintosh playing any of his own tunes.

Read he was quite a character... calling at least one of his Jigs a 'Reel'.

I should've just listened, because what the heck is going on starting at about 00:50? . Glad they managed to get everything back in sync by the end of the video. (lol)

was it getting out of sync?....have you asked them or was there something they posted that made you think that?

I dunno Emily..I think it was intentional.  and to be honest part of why I liked it.  Its part of why the video caught my attention...otherwise it wouldve just been another fiddle video to me.

Maybe whats cool was I wasnt looking for a strathespy video. it was just in the home section yesterday on youtube and after I played it I went to the description to get the name of the tune..  started looking for more about it and thats when i found all the other stuff. 😆  I certainly didnt know about Mrs Russell of Blackhall

That's really weird... the video appears to be fine, now. 😳

Either I've been touched by fairies, or YouTube was messed up - because I watched it twice, to try to make heads or tails of it!  It was like new sound had been recorded over the video, I could see a lot of bowing happening with no sound - wasn't like the sound cut out, but VERY noticeably delayed.

...editing my previous post. 🥴

Thank you, for bringing my attention to great Robert Mackintosh tunes! 🤗

Hope you've been bitten by the Strathspey bug bad enough to try one (?)

Btw, poked around at the session.org - found a really fabulous jig in Gm, 'Miss' Russell of Blackhall - composed by Robert Mackintosh!

...love how early composers would write tunes (commissioned?) for several members of family.  😊

LOVE hearing the difference in phrasing/ the groove between Chris Duncan's and Mari Black's rendition!

@elcbk. i ran across the 6/8 last night.  totally different vibe huh?

as far as a strathespy quest.. its mainly just that one tune at the moment.   I think theres a couple ive ran acroos before that i liked ...bog an lochan..the one @stringy did was cool and I may play around with those as time goes by..

Not sure if technically a strathespy medly but ive always liked the recording of Natalie and Buddy McMaster playing the King George medly.. I get a kick on it when he says.."were all set??  ...." 😄  like here we go hold on to your seats!

you can correct if these are reels or strathespys.. but here is a youtube of it.  its not the recording i was talking about but same set.  And yeah its cape breton ..but ..yah know all that history.

Ahhh heres the one...listen right at the beginning.

anyway..this was really about the OP but Im game for posting more along same lines.

I played the 1st tune in the medley, "King George IV", about a year & a half ago - in your Play a Tune With a Persons Name in Title Party, but I need to redo it with snaps added!

I'll take a strathspey over a reel any day!

@ABitRusty -

Really appreciate you inadvertently jogging my memory - without this, think life gets in the way of my good intentions to learn much of the great music we come across.

My memory is, understandably, failing me - 'The Good Tune Guys' barely rang a bell, but it was a year ago they introduced me to Vesselil (Thread), when they all played this fabulous Mazurka from Ærø - (Nordic Mazurka Thread) together!

haha... glad it was useful.   yes..alot of these are starting to overlap in various topics but thats good.. keeps them simmering. Also some things were beyond reach earlier too and now..although not played well at least are starting to take shape for me.  I have so many want to learns not only on fiddle but banjo stuff and Id really want to get busy with some dadgad backing on geetar. theres only so much time in a day. 😔  fiddle always wins..all the others are also haves at this point.
