ÈLIA BASTIDA is a Jazz Violinist (Spain) who started classical training at age 4, then she joined a Jazz Band at 17.  She wrote a great article in her Bio of what it was like, with a handful of video examples - some from her 1st album, to view here:

The Violin and Big Band

The violin is, as are all the instruments, very versatile, which combined with the capacity of expression that gives its powerful and penetrating sound, also has a lot of rhythmic strength.  That is why it is very important to understand that the instruments are the channel of expression of the language/music that we have inside.  It’s all about working out how to make the sound come through the instrument in the same way that you imagine it in your mind.

The "Jitterbug Waltz"!

Great, had a lot of the sound of Progressive Jazz from the late 50's to early 60's that I grew up with. The violin is carrying a lot of the tune that was normally given to trumpet. One of the highlights of my late teens was going to see Dizzy Gillespie in person at a small venue in Chicago called the The Birdhouse.

@JohnG -

Yes, I was also impressed how well a Violin could work in a band like this.

Èlia sets a GREAT example for other fiddlers who might enjoy this music, but think joining a brass & woodwind Jazz band is out of the question.
