Dr. Steffen Zeichner caught my attention with his band & his FIVE STRING VIOLIN!

He's got some GREAT tutorials!

...here's a sampling:

EXCELLENT - ANYONE CAN DO THIS!  Great for Violists - can use the 'C' string!

...would be cool on Hurdy Gurdy, too - strings tuned C/G. 😉

SOOO COOL!

🤔... can't believe I've been on the forum for 3 years & haven't converted a single Fiddler over to 5-strings!!!

Now, for something real, this is pretty cool

Slappin' the Fiddle... strings!

Belleville: melody and bass at the same time!  Charles McCarthy offered up this video where he replaced only the C & G strings with octaves.  LH plays bassline on those octave strings, with percussive techniques (hammer & pizz) - while also playing melody on the other regular strings!!! 😲

I'm not quite ready for this, yet (not even really, really slow 🥴) - but it's a goal I'll be working toward.  The thicker strings must make a huge difference in this.  My low F string is so much thicker than my C string, and I easily hear sound from tapping it - not so much the C.  So, I can imagine the octave strings would respond well, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to modify my bridge - not in a hurry!

Charles was ALSO kind enough to provide interactive sheet music at Soundslice! 🤗

Belleville (Gypsy Jazz for 5-string violin)

Okay, I love sharing stuff here (all in the interest of provoking discussion from kindred spirits), but I'm kinda bummed out that I haven't really seen folks interested in violins 'made' to use 5 strings.  The amazing improvements I've experienced in my Glasser 6-string make me believe makers ARE ( and have been) taking this instrument seriously.  I do blame myself for not sharing any video of my 6-string... but y'all are making me feel lonely.

@stringy -

Yes!

Many of us mix brands of strings, but this is wild!

The mixing of techniques is cool, but how does he avoid the G string while bowing on D string?  The bowing surface of the G & C string is so much higher than normal, because of how thick they are.
