We have been diligently working on 3d position(him and I , not his teacher and him)for a couple weeks now and we decided to record his first tune. I thought initially it was going from first to third, but realized once the "tape was rolling" that it was entirely in third. He LOVES 3d position and practicing in third...don't know why cause I ABHORED it, hahahaha.

@JimandThomas -

Exciting - YOU ARE IN THE ZONE!

Beautiful sounding 3rd position!

You've discovered, once you are in 3rd position, it's very similar to playing across first!

It's a GREAT 4th finger workout, isn't it?

I personally think the shifting part can be the hardest, especially when you start learning to shift to a different position across strings, but think it can be helpful to learn where your open-string octave notes are (and eventually more) - they can help be your guide to hopping around on the fingerboard map.

very impressive, his intonation is extremely good, especially as you say he is only practicing, third, sounds like he has been playing in that position for years. having a young mind really helps, but maybe we have a prodigy on our hands, really hope so.

In each video the improvement is there to see and is very rapid indeed, like I said on one of the oher vids, I really like his arm and hand shape, great stuff.

@ELCBK Thank you and agreed. @stringy Wouldn't it be nice to go back to our childhood whenever we need to learn something new, hahahaha. It seems like we picked up on things so much easier. It is almost like starting all over now since he is focussing on the Belgian bow hold, and that is the most frustrating part for him. I told him to just dont worry about this hold when he plays 8th and 16th notes right now because once it becomes automatic when he plays the slower notes, then it will come with faster notes.

Thomas B.

Sounding good!

I personally have come to embrace 3 position after I had said why in the world would you play anything in 3rd position and not first position!

Hate it when I have to eat crow.

@JimandThomas -

I ran across a nice video from a Fiddle Festival this past April, in Llano Texas.  Thought Thomas might enjoy seeing Tristan Paskvan (maybe same age) enjoying the 'Fiddle' side of Violin - a few double stops & even a shift to 3rd position, too!

Know you are terribly busy, but saw there's a very family-friendly Bluegrass Festival coming up at the Litchfield Fairgrounds, June 16th - 19th.  Maybe there are others this Summer... a great place to make friends who have the same enthusiasm.

Very useful to be able to play in positions. Keep up the great work.
