On 6/8 time, the quaver (1/8 note) gets the beat.
So are there 3 x crochets (1/4 notes) in a bar?
And a minim (1/2 note) is 2 in a bar, each lasting 3 beats?

It's early Sunday morning and my brain can't handle this?
FM, can you do a 'Time Signature for dummies video"?
I definitely come under THAT heading, lol

thanks al_th,

certainly a lot clearer than some web-sites I have been checking.

so in "pirate" a dotted minim or 1/2 note, takes 4 beats + and extra half = 6 beats?

I think this is where using English names "minim""quaver"" semi-breve" might help coz for an example an 1/8 note is just a name, in the case of 6/8 Time signature, it's not 8 x 1/8 note = a Bar, its 8 quavers or 4 crochets or 1½ minims.

where's my wine glass gone?

To answer your questions one by one:

On 6/8 time, the quaver (1/8 note) gets the beat.

YES or 3 notes to a beat depending on if you choose to count 2 beats per bar or 6 beats to a bar.

So are there 3 x crochets (1/4 notes) in a bar?

Yes, 3 quarter notes equals 6 eighth notes thus the 6 above the 6/8

And a minim (1/2 note) is 2 in a bar, each lasting 3 beats?

Don't quite understand the question but a dotted half is 3 quarter notes lasting 6 eighth note beats or 2 triplet beats depending on how you are counting the piece, fast six or slower 2. Anytime you put a dot next to a note symbol you increase it's value by half. A quarter note = 2 eighth notes. A dotted quarter = 2 + 1 eight notes = 3 eighth notes.

Hope this explanation help you more than confusing you.exactly
