I was just wondering, when playing bluegrass, is it more common to play open strings or to plat forth finger?
I would suspect that 4th finger is very common in Bluegrass because 4th finger is an economy in speed versus having to change strings. Of course, that may be true for any kind of fast music.

Well, an anecdote is not data but my instructor is a bluegrass fiddler and he primarily uses his 4th finger. It not only appears to increase his speed but also his options for ornamentation.

With the chords and double-stops lot's of open strings. When appropriate to play faster fourth finger. It's all dependent on what works the best.
