Hi All
I was wondering if others had the same annoying problem. I reckon it's holding me back.
The problem is, as soon as I try to play in front of another person or a microphone , I fall apart. Everything just goes down the tube and I can't put a finger or bow right.
Anyone else???
Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of ..... What was I saying????

All do honesty... I only play in front of my wife and kids right now, lol. At least I know they will lie to me and spare my feelings.
But I can imagine, playing in front of anyone is difficult. I have read numerous post on here about that and the most unanimous advice is quite simple, "Have Fun." Wuit worrying about playing it perfectly and just play it like no one is watching. That is the only way I can get my version of Ode to Joy from being banned in several countries!

Don't feel left out in the cold,,,, happen's to me all the time. Everytime I start to do a YouTube vid, I find myself redoing it at least 10 time's before I'm satisfied, even though I play it fine when not recording.
I think it's normal.

I find it easier to play in front of actual people than to record. My usual nickname for the record button is "the suck button", because I find the effect of pressing it seems to be as reliable as any FX box. Video is even worse, since then you have to think about whether you are in the frame where you want to be and that you aren't so close to the camera that it looks like some bizarre surrealist project or something.
Playing in front of people, though, the nerves fade quick. Oddly, I think it can be harder to play for a few or just one person than a few hundred.

The problem is - The conscious need for perfection (unattainable) and the minds ability to sabotage due to a lack of self confidence.
The cure - Put yourself outthere sucky or not. Train your brain that its ok to just play and that perfection is not the goal. After some time you will relax and your recordings will improve.
The testamony - When I first started recording I experienced this first hand. 50+ takes to get an acceptable vid just because of a squeek or slight misbow was good enough for me to trash that take. Then I listened to this song and applied it to fiddle playing.
It tells the story of the fiddle and of the man who falls in love with it. First there's desire, then passion, then suspicious (this fiddle hates me), jealousy, anger, betrayal. When fiddling is to the most talented.....its enough to drive you mad!!!!
Or something like that. I also love the fiddle playing in it.

I grew up EXTREMELY bashful.. it has taken me a long time to do anything in front of people, or even around people.. There is good news tho, its not uncureable. I am still a bundle of nerves for the first couple songs. I still have a suck button, stink it up still, alot..The best cure Ive found is to force yourself to play in front of people, it worked for me. Last year I played over a 4 day span in front of 20 to 30 thousand people, how many of them passed in front of me Im not sure, but it was alot... I also had help from a cousin who has been playing for many years in front of people, she told me to just go play and dont worry about them, do your best and they will love you..and if you dont get up here and play Im coming over there and beating you to death with your fiddle, shes a serious lady, I took her seriously. Im still a bit shy but getting over it and having a whole bunch of fun in the process.. Imagine it will get easier for you..
