you really dont need to. If you know the alphabet and understand and can find the starting point then shifting to diff posistions becomes easy. for example as I mentioned in Cool Pink Ones post on Vibrato. You want to know where third posistion is say on the E string. So the third finger note on the E string in first pos is a A right? so thats where your pointer finger (nose picker) goes. The next note is a B which is a full tone above the A so using a tuner find the B thats where you second finger goes right? so what is this similar too, actually its the same fingering for first posistion on the G string right? A B C D all on the high E string at third posistion. So if you can do the finger shapes on the G string you are close on the high E except for one universal truth......The further up the fingerboard you go towards the bridge the closer your fingers will be together to hit the notes. hope this helps. First finger drills really help too in finding your starting point. Using your palm like FM suggests is ingeniously simple, I love that and it really helps me.
