First off, I received my very first violin for Christmas!! woohoo!  So excited!  I'm so overwhelmed by where to start, but for now I've been working on my bowing.  My question is:  Are you supposed to bow with the hairs flat against the strings or at an angle?  Also, is it normal to sound really screachy?  I try to bow right in the middle of the bridge and fingerboard as nice and smooth as possible, but it sounds so screachy most of the time.  Is it just a beginner thing, or what?!  Any help would be appreciated :D

It's normal but doesn't have to be that way. Experiment with different bow pressures, speed. Use mostly your elbow for now and try to bow parallel to the bridge. Use a mirror at first if you have to. Make sure you have plenty of rosin on your bow.
