Hey guys! Today I'm going to finally post a recording of me playing Over The Rainbow. Please don't mind the horrible playing and sorry for the bad sound quality because my recorder isn't very good. Please comment so that I can improve and I know my tempo isn't very good hahah. :)

Tempo wasn't bad at all!  And your timing and phrasing are definitely good.  Keep up the good work.  thumbs-up

Thank you DanielB!! :) I thought the tempo was off because I wasn't looking at the music sheet.

Huey my dear,  that song alway's make's me wanna cry. I'm not quite sure how to say this in a way as not to hurt your feeling's, but you did want comment's. For the most part it was good. If you have the sheet music available to you, you should use it. You need to work on intonation. If you are trying to play the song by ear, try to match the tune in your head with the note being played on the fingerboard, otherwise use the sheet.

I understand that you are a very busy girl with your studies and all. I'm sure you are not able to practice as much as you would like to.

I'm happy you are enjoying your violin and keep up the good work, young lady. thumbs-up

That's a great start!  My suggestions would mirror Fiddlestix's.  Glad the new fiddle seems to be treating you well.

Always good to look at the positives as well as negatives.

Your sound is nice and even and I didn't think the quality was bad at all. Sounds smooth and controlled.

Now, as far as intonation goes you have a starting point and can work on improving the accuracy of the notes. If we take your first interval for example, you should go from the open D to a D on the A string. One octave. The notes are the same but an octave above. Match the note. On your recording you are playing a B natural witch is normally played with your 1st finger. You want to play a D with the 3rd finger.

Can I hear just the open strings to see how in tune your violin is after tuning it?

Also, have you used the fiddlerman online tuner?

Keep up the work, you'll get there.

Way to go Huey! thumbs-up Smooth bowing I like it. And as others say, work on intonation but eh, don't we all work on that all the time anyway haha.

Thanks everyone! I'll keep working on the intonation :P And about tuning, I try to tune around few times a month because I'm kind of scared of tuning. I broke the E-string from tuning once and it scared me. Luckily there's the spare string or else I wouldn't have any E-string. Is it normal to break your E-string? I used your tuner FM but like I said, I don't tune all the time, only when it is really out of tune. I know you all tune it every time but I don't think it is really necessary here since the temperature is pretty constant so do I still have to tune it all the time? Oh and I'll upload the open strings after tuning after this :D

Here's the open strings after tuning. It's a bit soft though so you might have to increase your volume embarassed

Thanks for the open string sample. It sounds like all of the strings are a bit out of tune. No wonder you're struggling with intonation. wink

G string: needs to be tuned down a little

D string: needs to be tuned up a little

A string: should be tuned up about a whole step

E string: also needs to be tuned up

Tuning can be tricky in the beginning. When tuning remember that the strings next to each other should sound like the beginning notes of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." I still sometimes sing that in my head while I am tuning.

Good luck! It will get easier. laugh

Sara O, you are right on as I got the same.

Maybe a pich pipe if not an electronic tuner would help.  But then there is the FM tuner.

G is a G# and need to go down

D is almost a C# and needs to go up

A is just a few cents high of a G and needs to go up almost a full step

E is just a few cents high of a D and needs to go up almost a full step

It doesn't hurt to at least check tuning before you start to play, Huey.  If the temperature is pretty constant where you live, then it might usually be in tune, but you won't know for sure until you check.  If you do have to tune it once in a while, don't worry, it does get easier with practice, just like everything else.  If you are worried about breaking strings, just turn the peg a little bit at a time.  A little bit on a violin tuning peg can be a lot of difference in pitch.

Making sure the violin is in tune before playing will also help develop your ear quicker and make it that much easier to get your intonation better.

Ouhh I see. Hahah yea I still don't really get how to tune properly yet. And Thanks Sara for the 'twinkle twinkle little star' tune, I'd do that next time. Oh and I tune using FM tuner but I thought it was correct already. LOL I really need to get a tuner. :P
