I found a really excellent seminar by violist Kim Kashkashian, recorded from Zoom last summer, that covers a variety of topics relating to posture and movement. It includes warming up, some mobility exercises, holding the instrument and bow, a little bit of tai chi for string players, and a brief discussion of chinrests and shoulder rests.

About an hour long, worthwhile for violinists or violists at any level from beginner to pro.

Some of this is very similar to what I've been getting in my lessons recently, which I'm not surprised by at all because my current teacher was a student of Kim Kashkashian. (In fact, I came across this because I was looking for videos of my teacher's teacher.)

@AndrewH

This is fantastic! I especially loved the section where you work back rather than stretch the 4th finger. That is a problem with my violin, viola, and also cello. My 4th finger could not stretch as far as it needed and gave me joint soreness, Every instructor I had said to force the 4th and not adjust the first. It really hindered me. Not everyone's body is built the same.

That was part of the reasons for stopping, I was not allowed to adjust for my fingers and joints. I did not think my finger joints, especially my 4th finger, should hurt. Felt like I was forcing it to do something it just could not do. So, after I stopped all lessons, I decided to try something similar to what was explained in the video, but I was holding back in case I was going to regret it later. What little adjust I did make sure made a difference. I never had issues until the 4th finger and extended 4th came more into play.  I think I will now do exactly as she stated. I am going to rewatch that section a few times.

Thank you, AndrewH! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

I have pinned this topic to keep it at the top and in the limelight for a while.

Thanks Andrew! I watched this at work today . I really liked the bit about the right arm and the tendinitis.. I think I did get a bit of tennis elbow well I did for a while but it seems much better now. Also agree with mouse about the fourth finger. I have practiced it and I think putting fourth finger down first helps get my thumb in the right place!
