Hi All

Since starting the violin (and as of tomorrow the viola) I've only been using three left fingers. I've not been using the fourth because it's a bit of a reach for me and my left little finger strength is a bit low. If it had the same strength as the right one it would be OK

Are there any exercises that can help with this?

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

I don't really know any exercises for it, other than to use the pinky where it makes sense to rather than leaving it out.  If you try to use it a lot at first it will get sore easy, just like the other fingers probably did at some point.  So I'd say just start making it  point to use it when you play tunes and scales.

But as a hopefully encouraging thought, you have four fingers on your left hand, and up till now you have only been using three of them?  Thinking of it in analogy to the limbs of the body, that's kind of like trying to do stuff with one hand literally tied behind your back.

So the world has only ever heard 75% of Ferret up till now.  blink

Making sure to keep your finger bent, use every opportunity to press it against something. Just as if you were trying to play a note with it.

An old theory for muscle building is to put the finger into the "press" position and hold it for 8 seconds. Repeat this 3 times then rest your finger. Do this as many times as you like but don't make it painful.

It was found that when a frog had one back leg immobilised, the strength of that leg increased more than the other. Due to the leg trying to move whilst being restricted

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

I never flunked lunch UNTIL I started getting kinda serious about music.  Then I almost always skipped lunch to use the rehearsal rooms.  LOL
