What is it about G on the D string and D on the A string (same position, different strings)? Half the time they sound awful...scratchy and/or dead, making them my least favorite notes. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or what I can do to make them sound better?

I have the same problem and I realized that in my case it's how I position my pinky. Try to hit the string with the tip not the flat of your finger (curl it well), half the time it makes my note sound better (the other half I fail at positioning my finger haha). Was playing on the G and D strings tonight with Lightly Row and I fought with the pinky for 30 min.

I was / am having that problem also, so I took the Zyex A string off and put on a Helicore A string.  WOW, was that bad, made it sound like a French horn. I also noticed that the Helicore A string was noticeably thinner to the touch, and a smoother finish. It almost felt like a E string but I know it's not. Now I'm back to the Zyex A string.

You could have a wolf on your instrument too.

I agree with Noir when I play notes that sound awful is is generally caused by me using the flat instead of the tip of my finger.

Any note on the G or D sound horrible to me. I try to stay away from them, but I know I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and give it a good go at some point in time. I dunno, there's just something about those two strings that I can't stand. facepalm

I have found an ocassional weird sounding note is directly linked to the condition of my strigs and/or hair (re: rosin). I started playing the other day, just some plain ol scales stuff and on the D string I had a buch of notes near the 2-3 finger positon that sounded like crap...the other strings sounded fine... I immediately took a flannel rag I have in my box and wiped the strings a few times, hit the bow hair with some fresh rosin and magically the crazy flat weird sounding note disappeared.

Might be what you have going on ... they can be tempermental some times. I now usually just git the rosin block once in the beginning of my practice day.
