When is a D# an Eflat and vice versa?
And the same for other combinations?

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

Does it depend on the key you are in?

If you look at Pierre's violin fingering chart :

E major, A string, 3rd finger high is a D# but on the

Ebm    , A string, 3rd finger high is a Eb

so I totally agree with springer, it depends on the key you are playing in.note

Yes, completely on the key signature. While argumentively there is a difference between a sharp and flat note that happen to have almost the same frequency, they are the same. In other-words, An Eb is the same as a D#. If you play in a key signature that has flats you will be playing only flats. If playing in a #key signature, you'll be playing sharps.
