Well panic has set in.  Fiddlershop shipped my new FM Concert set up today and I realized that I can't remember how to read music.  I've looked here on the website and it is all completely greek to me.  I sincerely hope it comes back as I'm getting my new baby next week   LOL

The friend that is going to help me learn keeps referring me back to my piano days.  I finally convinced him it has been over 45 years since I've played and that I don't even have it anymore.  I think he thought I was kidding cause I was so gung ho to learn the fiddle.

So, this should be interesting to say the least.

Once you have an instrument in hand and can make some sounds, I'll bet it all comes back to you fast.

I think everyone worries a little about something or other while they're waiting for their first violin to get there.

When you where playing he piano could you pay 'by ear' at all?

I can't read music but I still play the fiddle.

It will probably all come back to you.

Can you take at least a couple of lessons with an instructor to get you started?

Thanks all for the votes of confidence.

DanielB, that is what I'm hoping for!!!!

Ferret, that is what worries me most.  No I didn't play by ear, I totally site read.  Yet, as time went on, I tended to improvise my music somewhat, so maybe I can use that (if I can find it again that is...LOL)

1stimetar, yes, I'm going to have an instructor...somewhat that is, but I think that I will be doing a lot of this on my own.

It is just one of those things that keeps me awake a nights....that, my job, my kids...you know how it goes.  I know that when I start, all will be right with the world.   I just tend to over think over the strangest things.   Sometimes just putting it into words helps too.  So that is where you all come in!  You are the avid listeners that can say just the right things.  gold_star

If you look to the lower right hand side of this page, there are video tutorials for where you can put your fingers for each note, but then you can do a search for reading the music itself.  I'd like to say it will come back but I played the clarinet when I was young for a few years and I had to start all over.  None of it came back!

The Fingering game!!!!!! definitely helped me.

Oh the excitement of a NEW violin!

BE VERY CAREFUL IT IS ADDICTIVE!

Next thing you know there will be 3 violins in your house.

Ask Ferret he's up around 6 now.

I think reading music will come back to you - but definitely take advantage of the fingering game!

ha ha screeeech that is so true!  I got my first violin... quickly decided I needed an electric (told myself it was for 'quiet' practice.... but I knew I just wanted it !)

then I 'had' to have a better violin.  So now I have three... and have been psyching myself up to a violin-in-the-white! surprised

I hope the site reading comes back to you.  Some might..but whatever the case.  I started cold turkey a year or so ago and I can read and play from sheet now.. in a basic and sufficient way to expand into songs that I love and want to play.

Cheers.. good luck.. Enjoy!!!

jkd, a simple beginners learn to play violin book might help you remember real quick. You'll probably have great strides in the beginning and it'll slow down after that.

In any case, it's exciting to get started again and I hope you enjoy your FM Concert Violin. :-)
