I started playing my two selected violin pieces today, Jefferson County and Country Stroll. Pretty sure I made a wise choice. They are not as easy as the sheet music would have you think. They have a lot to offer.

Both are key of G.

Jefferson County This song wants to be played fast. It is hard to make it go at a speed I can handle. So, that is a challenge. It also has some E string, I need work on that. I have to go from the A to B a couple times. I always have issues there because my third finger slides up and when I go back to the A after the B with the 4th finger, I am messed up. I now have to concentrate on that. There is an optional double stop with the D on the A string and open D string. I am trying to do that.

For now, I am breaking it into sections. Right now, I am stopping with the 3rd beat of the 8th measure. The 4th beat leads into the next measure, so I stop on the 3rd beat. I do end with going through the entire piece a couple times.

Country Stroll This piece is eighth and sixteenth notes, with a couple quarter notes. You would think it would be labeled fast, but it is moderate. The black notes are freaking me out a bit, but after I get going at the speed I need, I seem to be okay. First couple times through were a little tense. The main thing with this piece is its constant speed and changeups between the 8th and 16th notes. There are only 4 quarter notes, at the end of 4 of the measures.

Ths 5th and 7th measures have pizzicato. Never did that before, so that is a good feature of this song. A little uncoordinated with it right now, but not too bad, I just do it with the run through, a couple times, at the end of my session. TI am stopping at the end of the 4th measure, so those measures are not, technically, being worked on right now.

The more you play, the easier it will get to play it to time.  You know this.

As for the left hand being out of position issue; I have the same problem.  Early on it was worse than it is now so practice is the key to solving it.  I got used to checking my hand position after certain 4th finger reaches and resetting as needed even if I couldn't stay on tempo because of it.  The more I did that, the faster I was able to reset my hand position.  I'm still not at a place where I'm smooth at it, but that will come.  Eventually.  I hope.  Learning Third Position might help with that too because I'll have to go from 1st, to 3rd and back again.  Which means I have to know when my hand is in the correct position after the change to/from.

8th and 16th notes are still just notes.  Shorter than half or quarter notes, but still just notes.  You simply just play them.

I'm going to start Suzuki Vol. 2 this weekend.  First piece is the Chorus from Judas Maccabaes.  I hate it already and I've barely looked at it.

@RDP Actually, The Chorus From Judas Maccabaes is quite fun. I did it and do it on my viola and cello, also. I did not like it at first, but ince you get into it, it is fun. Break it up into sections. There is a lot of room for your own interpretation for how you want to play it once you get into it. I will play that with other songs when I just pull an instrument off the rack to play. It joined the other ones that I have memorized and do with the pulled down instrument, informal playing.

So, give it a chance and go into it with a positive attitude. I would have had an easier time with it, had I done that. It is fun, and not really hard, but challenging and continues on from Book 1, so not at the same level.

@mouse

I'd rather hate it.  That way when I get frustrated and need to vent, I have a good reason to yell.

Well, @RDP I tried to attach an audio recording, but it wouldn't work. I am not interested in messing with youtube. Too time consuming and I am deleting all those videos from Youtube. I thought that if I did the audio recording on the Voice Recording app that I could just attach the little MP4 file with attachments below the text box, but it is a no go. The file is grayed out when I go to the location on my iPad to attach it. PDF's, yes, but the MP4, no. I was only going to do it one time, anyway.

It was the same thing when I tried to PM it to you, obviously.

Mouse is an appropriate username for me, lots of squeaks.

Ah, it is M4A, not MP4. I would have to convert it to an MP4. That takes too much time away from playing and other things. Plus, another app to find and download.

Ah, that explains it.

(On my mac, I can change a .m4a file to a .mp3 simply by changing the file extension – writing .mp3 at the end of the file name. Seems to work. But, no such luck on iOS (phone)…)

C'est la vie.  I will have to substitute a melody in my mind for your playing and be inspired by that rather than the real thing.

Inspiration would be good because I haven't played a note since sometime last week.  I am thinking of trying again today, but I'm not sure I will.  It's just interference from some serious work related burn out but it is interference none the less.

I totally get that. I was that way the end of last year/beginning of this year from my old job. I couldn’t relax to enjoy playing.

I am still working on these pieces and are a LOT of fun.

I want to use Jefferson County to get more speed from my fingers after I can play through the entire song smoothly at the speed I am currently doing.

For some reason, I have issues with Country Stroll. I think it is because it is a different rhythm and it affects me when going from one to the other. Rather that dodge that issue, I will continue working both.
