There is a set of steel strings with chromium windings which are the best strings I have ever put on my violin in over 6 years. They are available for under $20. The name is Black Diamond #7207. They are certainly the best on that violin for country but maybe not for classic (?). They don't sound anything like the ordinary plain metal strings.

whadya know , I found a thread about strings! I really like Infeld Vision Titanium Solo's and/or the Titanium Orchestra's. For me, they have a very nice sweet focus. The string pack lists them as slightly over half between warm and brilliant, slightly toward the brilliant side.
imo, different fiddles like different strings. I fell in love with these strings from the first time I tried 'em about 3 years ago, and I've gone thru about 4 acoustics in the past coupla years trying to find one I was happy with around the 2.5k range. I was getting back into acoustic from electric.
Anyways... some of those acoustics liked other strings better so I used what was best for the fiddle. But my latest acoustic which I got about 3 months ago and I'm very happy with, also performs very well with these Vision Titanium's. So looks like I've been fortunate with a violin I like that also likes the strings I like. If y'all can sort thru all that.
