bythe way, forgot to say make sure your bridge is in exact right place, which is in line with the two nicks on the f holes, and also that it is at the right angleit should look as though it is leaning back slightly, if you place a credit card on too of the violin behind the bridge and on the side of the end piece you can use this to check the angle, there are vids on line showing how to do this, if there is no string protector on the e string the bridge wont last five minutes the string will cut in

Thanks @stringy I have used a bit of wire coating to protect the bridge. My Acoustic Violin is now set up. It actually doesn't sound bad but think it would sound a lot better with decent strings. I don't think i will be playing Classical so will bridge height matter ?. I think i read somewhere that the strings should be lower with other types of music. The strings sit quite high at the beginning of the fingerboard, will that matter ?.

bridge height makes no difference in classical or trad as far as I am aware, though I could be wrong over that, I play both styles. If you get into it and get a violin from a luthier they will set the entire instrument up wwhich includes bridge, believe itor not a well cut bridge can cost quite a bit of money, fiddlerman sells them set up as good as anyone straight from he shop butthey dont ship over here unfortunately. I boughtmy violin from a luthier in Liverpool at the blue coat where he has his workshop.
A well setup violin is easier to play, for instance vibrato is easier on this one than it was on my other, vibrato is a very dificult skill to learn though anyway.
your string height is a prroduct of set up and the violin itself, on a better instrument it will be lower.
if you are thinking of playing traditional Irish music, jigs, reels and such like, string height that you mention wont matter as much because yyou generally wont move out of first position, in classical you play higher up the neck so finger placement and speed of play would be hampered

@LordOdin -
Don't think you should be too concerned about your string action (height) unless your open strings are buzzing off the fingerboard. (lol) You don't need to press the string all the way down to the fingerboard to stop it from vibrating. I've watched William Fitzpatrick videos on YouTube - he talks in detail.
Here's a great Thread discussion.

Thanks Guys. I am a big fan of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) in case you didn't know. It was them that got me into music many years ago, Jeff Lynne is still my hero even now. So if you don't know ELO they were a band who mixed Classical with Rock, Their rendition of Roll Over Beetoven is the best version imo. Anyway the Violinist or one of them was a guy called Mik Kaminski and the sounds he got from the Violin were awesome. If i ever wanted to imitate a Rockstar it would be him or John Lennon who was also an hero of mine who was taken before his time. So my goal is to learn some ELO Violin Music.

nothing to stop you in your goal, I used to like the violinist from the levellers. not what got me into violin though, I started a couple of years ago as a challenge, I am a guitarist amongst other instruments, I like all kinds of music, but never thought I was a ,'real' musician as they can put music on a stand and instantly play it, or thats what I thought lol, but then became hooked with violin which is very easy to do.I am well aware of ELO by the way, believe it or not up to a few years ago I still went to every festival in the uk, I was a bit of a traveller type.

The strings I use are pirastro tonica, you can pick them up for around 22 quid
That seems too cheap to me. If you can pick them up on ebay from China for £22, then they are perhaps fakes.
Hmm, thestringzone (very trustworthy) charges £25.75. That's cheaper than I expected (yes, it's down from £31.45, so it may be a seasonal sale. I hope they're not starting to buy their stock online - shops do that and pass on fakes that way). But one of the problems with internet fakes is they aren't much cheaper than originals, so it's harder to smell a rat. However, if you are sure your vendor is reliable, go for it.

gordon the string zone is were I get mine from, couldnt remember the exact price but I knew they were around the 22 quid mark, I would never buy anything from ebay myself. I also have had them from a luthier in Liverpool exactly the same strings, saying that ,I cant tell the difference anyway.

If you listen to ELO's early stuff which i prefer you can hear the Cello's and Violin's which were more prominent then. They then went a bit more pop probably to try and keep up with the other Artists in the late 70s and early 80s, i seen them a few times, infact i had a job many years ago selling T Shirts and Scarves and such so seen many bands and singers free. I think my main love will always be Guitar but have always had a passion for most stringed instruments, my main problem is getting to play and practice them on a regular basis. With 3 Guitars, 2 Banjo's and 2 Violins it's a struggle sometimes which i fancy playing and practicing with, my sister who actually lives next door to me is usually moaning about the noise i make. Also @stringy I have a Looper on my Roland amp but never tried it. It's a really great amp with plenty of functionality but so far just used on my Fender Strat, I have what i call a pocket amp, really small which i have had the Electric Violin on, i actually forgot i had it until i came across it the other day, i think it's only 5 or 10 Watts but nice for the Violin. The Roland although not massive in size is massive on sound lol.

your talk of guitar playing took me back to the dark side lol, had a swift half hour on it this afternoon! first time for about six months, I dont really create enough time any more for other instruments, was talking about this very thing with Emily the other day, I have become totally obsessed with the fiddle🤓if your not careful it will happen to you.

@stringy Yeah i know what you mean, i always thought of the Violin as a busy little instrument for some reason, maybe because of my liking of Bluegrass plus ELO of course. When you hear Bluegrass you can hear the Violin going Ten to the Dozen, i actually find it calming when i am practicing. Usually i am rushing ahead of myself trying to learn but the Violin is a much slower pace for me for some reason. I think it's the Banjo's fault because a lot of what you learn is played at quite a speed, even practice is aimed at upping your speed, Guitar can be a nice steady pace but even that can go at quite a rate sometimes. Your right though, i think Violin is slowly becoming my favourite, at least for the time being.
