This is a REALLY good video on how to use Michael Eskins ABC transcription tools to learn new tunes.   Michael goes through how he is using it to learn a tune.  He has an hour or so long webinar q & a on his youtube that describes the tool in morr detail.   many videos over there as well.  just wanted to point this particular one out because it shows how to use the tool in a more practice setting instead of a trascribing use.

I don't know how I missed this!

My eyes usually glaze over when I see ABC notation, but using them to isolate phrases for practicing a tune - seems fabulous!

YT videos let me place the curser where I want to start practice, but I have to keep re-tapping it to restart a phrase (can't even do that to 'The Session site' audio - so Michael Eskin's ABC Tools would be a GREAT help.

One important thing - you already have to know how a type of tune is supposed to sound.  There's a very interesting discussion recently on The Session - Writing Out Reels Wrongly.

My only drawback - making myself go thru the ABC user guide (and retain it)... from the video I could probably get by, if I only want to practice jigs.  That video gives me some incentive, though (Thank You).

Yes, I have thought that ABC might be quite helpful for me, especially as a way to write down the opening notes of tunes that I almost remember — the tunes that can’t quite get started but I can play just fine once they get going. (“How does that go?”)

But I haven’t been willing— so far, anyway — to put in the time and energy to learn the ABC system. I know it’s not that difficult, but …

@Strabo -

🤣 ...yeah, so much to learn, so little time - I can relate!

It may take me a while to get around to learning it, but sooner-or-later I will.  Early in the year, or later in the Summer, are the best times for me to concentrate on learning something new like this - reminders help!

Oops, I almost forgot - wanted to add the link to this other important thread:
