Just wondering what your aims are violin wise for 2022! I’m obviously still very much a beginner so I’m thinking third position and maybe bring some vibrato into my playing! So by this time next year I’m thinking Once in Royal David’s City in third position with vibrato played ok!
How about everyone else?

I love this question, @Katie L. I think this question deserves some real thought by us. I think this is a question we should all ask at the beginning of a new year. Thank you for this topic.
I thought about this post for quite a while to figure out what I want to achieve with my playing this year. For 2022, my aims or goals are to improve my bowing, and have my intonation consistent enough in first position to spend more time on the next logical position. If I recall, it really is not second position, and it may be different, depending on which instrument, but I do not know. I will have to find out.
I would like to feel more comfortable recording myself. To me, that is the same as performing in front of people and with people. I think my thoughts on that might be good for my blog, so I will leave what I have issues with or what goes through my mind and its goofy way of thinking for my blog, in a few days. But, it takes me forever to record myself. I need to get over that. It might be that if I can achieve goal 1, this goal might be easier.
I would like to add vibrato on violin and viola, and greatly improving it on my cello to the list, but, I do not want to add too much to my list. I think just improving my bowing, intonation and moving onto the next logical position is probably enough, and might be doable, or at least doable to the point I will see improvement, even if the next position is not seriously added. Then, work on feeling more comfortable recording myself.
I think we should revisit this post at the end of 2022. Therefore, I am pinning this to the top of this topic. Those of us who reply, should let us know how you each did with your 2022 goals. I have also added the 2022 to the topic title, not the description as it was when posted, so the year we are talking about is more visible.
We should start a new topic in 2023 with this same exact question and date it 2023. It would be interesting to see how long we can keep this topic subject, albeit different years, going, and compare our goals and achievements towards those goals each year. Thank you, Katie m

I'm hoping that by Christmas next year I'll be done with Suzuki Book 2 and will have a sufficiently stable playing ability that I can participate in the group project.
Some other goals during the year include learning some music outside of Suzuki (like Gaelic "Slow Airs"), an electric violin (either bought or built myself), and "going on the road" to record my weekly progress Vlog at various locations around the area. One of the places I'm hoping to get permission to play at is inside an aircraft hangar. That one might take some working on to get it to happen, but I've got lots of other locations I can play at like the beach (pacific ocean), local lakes, parks, monuments and landmarks, and so on. I just have to wait until I've progressed enough that I'm not playing as horribly as I do now with simple learning tunes.

Hmm. I've been extremely dissatisfied with my playing in the last two months and mostly just want to consistently sound somewhat competent. I especially need to work on: consistency of tone quality, eliminating my tendency to play everything slightly sharp, and playing off-the-string bow strokes more evenly and with less tension.
Goals for 2022: play consistently pain-free, and prepare at least one solo piece to where I can consistently sound decent playing it from beginning to end (all movements).

At 2½ years into this, I'm just now starting to play a little cleaner, a little more in tune, a little in other positions & a little vibrato on all 5 strings.
🤗 1.) Just want to get better at what I've started.
🤗 2.) Think it's time I get serious about becoming a little more tech-savy!
I'd like to get familiar with my "Spark amp" (untouched for a year, since I bought it) - plus, my Brother just gave me a "Flamma FS21 Stereo Drum and Looper Pedal Editor" (for Christmas) - like to learn to use it, too! Then, there's all the associated software I would like to learn.
🤗 3.) Like to have fun getting to know my new 5 string Viola when it arrives.
...but I know 2022 will fly by and I'm not putting any pressure on myself, because I need flexibility in my life!

I usually don't set goals, at least not for a whole year…I'm more a "take things as they come" kind of person, viola-wise.
But let's say :
1. improve my sound. Especially :
- on the C string, I can't figure it out…
- in higher positions (C and G strings) : 3rd and higher.
2. improve my bowing. I'm drifting too easily towards the fingerboard when I don't pay attention (not so on a violin, just the viola).
I'm laying down goals in terms of "improvement" so that I have some hope to achieve them and not be too disappointed looking back… I know I won't be anywhere near what I'd want.

It’s interesting seeing what people are doing. Now I’ve thought about it and had a rubbish practice session I actually think I need to go back to basics a bit. I feel like I skim over things for example I still don’t fully understand time signatures and I’ve completely missed out arpeggios. Also depending what I’m trying to do , my violin completely slips out of my hand! Maybe at some point I could learn third position but for now I’m going to go back and work in scales and arpeggios and some basic pieces and carry on my vibrato exercises! Thank you for your contributions to this thread I like the sound of learning to re hair !!! And also Stringy you play a load of amazing pieces!! Even I can tell that 😀

I asked Thomas exactly that question without prompting him at all and he said he wants to fiddle more, hahahaha. He is auditioning for the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra's teen ensemble on January 13. Although he is only 10, he was offered the chance and he is excited, but his goal for the coming year is to keep learning a fiddling tune every month, on top of the 'boring'classical, LOL.

Most of my fiddle heros started with classical training.. With your family history and Thomas' interest it wouldnt surprise me if we see him in those circles down the road. I assume Bangor Maine... which made me remember the Maine fiddle camps being discussed on some of the podcast I listen to. Those may be of interest if you havent already looked into them. thoughts from the fiddle point of view.
As for my goals I think just staying in lessons and to keep adding tunes that I can play from memory. Obviously improving intonation speed and rhythm ...maybe giving vibrato a peek this year.

What a great topic!
I have been thinking about my goals a lot and have already written something down for myself. This time of year feels good to think about it also because my cello anniversary is in early January. So my third year is about to begin!
One big goal is to improve my intonation. I think it’s actually a never ending process, you can always do it better. But I really need to focus on that, especially when playing in the orchestra. On the other hand, playing in orchestra also helps with it when you hear the others all the time.
My teacher is not a Suzuki teacher, but we have played a lot of same pieces that can be found in Suzuki books and kind of followed that path. I’m almost done with book 7, and my teacher’s idea is to move on to couple of book 8 pieces. So it’s also a nice goal because my dream is to learn Fauré’s Elegie and it’s one of the book 8 pieces.
Another big goal I already talked about with my teacher will be the next graded exam next fall. Sounds good, I’m absolutely ready to practice just as much as it takes. 💪
It will be interesting to revisit this post after a year and see if I have achieved these goals!

My Goals:
Develop/enhance my vibrato.
Continue work on arpeggios. I've recently been working on this—it is improving my ability to read long strings of 16th notes. I would just get lost in in them – now I’m seeing the patterns better so my fingers don’t get tied up in them.
Reestablish my daily practice routine. For the last year, my practice has been kind of haphazard. I’ve made progress over the year, but I know I can make great strides if I return to what was my normal schedule prior to 2021 (i.e., at least 1.5-2hr a day, 6 days a week).
Characterize people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words.

My major one is to feel confident and accomplished enough to participate in a group effort.
Other than that, I want to get to a point where I can read the alto clef easily, get my intonation to the point it doesn't hurt my (or anyone else's) ears, and to play with a tick track or backing track without losing my place.

Ugh, since I last looked two years ago, the DSO have upped their standard from grade 7 to grade 8. So maybe Sep 2024!

Personally? I am looking for good viola and cello pieces that stress 3rd position. But not particularly difficult. The point is to get used to 3rd position. I can’t learn difficult timing (too many black notes) and odd keys at the same time as trying to figure out 3rd and be comfortable with it. That is enough of a challenge.
