I believe every fiddler should have a good reason to think of themselves as a violinist at least once in a while. (Seriously, I think people waste just too much time worrying about any difference. I don't feel there is even as much difference as between flat-picking guitar and fingerpicking guitar. It's the same instrument, just differences of style and technique.)
Actually, a fiddle is any string instrument that is bowed, so; a fiddle is not the violin alone, but the violin is a type of fiddle.
cheers! - ⁰ℨ

Yeah, but most of the folks that consider themselves fiddlers are playing a violin. And as you point out, the violin is technically one of the instruments that can definitely be called a fiddle.

It depends on your dictionary. Your claim is contradicted by my Merriam-Webster Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary and by several dictionaries accessed through onelook.com.

I usually use "fiddlin' around" when I mess something up.....like the tv, the dishwasher, the computer.... LOL
.....I just wanted to bring this topic back to light with all the new members I'm seeing! I always have fun reading new responses to "Fill in the Blank!"
It' funny, I hardly see any of the members that joined around the same time as I did. I hope they are doing well!
And for our newest members (and those who would like to fill it out):

This thread was really fun to read. Some of the answers people put down were just great! The one about wearing pants really made me laugh...
Anywho, I suppose I'll join in as well.
- I’ve been fiddling for .5 year(s).
- My Favorite song to play, currently is the theme music from Titanic. I hate the movie but the music is great!
- The first song I ever learned was the theme to Braveheart as done by Taylor Davis.
- The song(s) I would really like to learn is Electric Daisy Violin by Lindsey Sterling. This was one of the songs that inspired me to start learning the violin.
- Some of my favorite violinists and groups are, well, the Fiddlerman of course! Lindsey Sterling and Taylor Davis remain my favorite violinist with Johannes Brahms as my most respected composer.
- I wanted to learn violin because it is one of the few things that have helped me find peace and for some reason, it always helps me relax. I also personally believe that God lead me to this path in life.
- When I play a song and find that I am out of tune in the middle of playing, I cringe! Well, that and stop playing right then to fix the tune. Yeah, it's an OCD.
- When I play a wrong note, I act like it was completely intentional and then hope nobody was listening...
- When I rehearse, I can't help but think I'm an expert dancer when nobody else is around.
- When I rehearse, my trusty tuner and polish must always be at my side.
- When I play in front of people, I try to image them all wearing Sponge Bob boxers to relax.
- When I see someone else play violin, I focus on their vibrato technique.
- When someone walks in on me while I am practicing, I usually get distracted and have to start over. It's really annoying!
- The most fun I have had when playing violin was doing a duet with my father on the piano. We played "What Child is This" during a family Christmas party.
- The most nervous I have been when playing the violin was when my boss asked me to play a solo in front of about 400 Soldiers. Thankfully, I got sent out of town that weekend to do an inspection. That's the first time I EVER looked forward to doing unit inspections.
- When I hear a random song on the radio that has violin, I always turn up the volume and try to pick up on their bowing/vibrato style.
- When I hear opera, I tend to twitch and run away crying.
- I believe every violinist should have a name for their favorite violin. My acoustic is named "Gelassenheit" or serenity.
- I believe every fiddler should have um, the same thing as a violinist?
- Violin adds a sense purpose to my life.
- Amazing Grace is a must learn song for all violinists.
- The most requested song I hear is well, nobody really request that I play anything for them right now other than my baby girl. Perhaps she has hearing loss...
- When I first started learning violin, I accidentally tightened my G-string too much to the point it snapped. When a friend went to repair it, he of course yelled out to everyone, "Look! He broke his G-string." I think I wanted to die...
- When others find out that I play violin, they tend to be shocked or treat it as a simple hobby.
- If I could go back in time to when I first picked up a violin, I would tell myself - well, being as it was only 5 months ago, I think I'd just tell myself never loose sight of the end-goal.
"I know a girl who cries when she practices violin because each note sounds so pure it just cuts into her, and then the melody comes pouring out her eyes. Now, to me, everything else just sounds like a lie."
