I love this! The other day I was telling my husband the names of my violins...he said they have names??? Now I don't feel weird anymore ?. I have a lord Wilton replica that I call Marvin because it looks like my granddads old violin and an old German violin I call Hester-that was my grandmothers name. I just figured it was only right to name the other one after my grandmother.
The interesting thing is that the old German violin was made 1 year before my grandparents were born. It isn't very pretty but it has character and I like how it sounds.

I'm with damfino. I call my Louis Lowendall made in Berlin 1893 my German, and my no label China, my China.
My China was waiting for an Evah Gold (silver) G string that just came in the mail today from the states. I don't like the Evah Gold (gold) G strings.
I don't like the Evah Gold (gold) E strings either, and I've got an Evah Gold (steel) E string on it.
So now I have a complete set of Evah Gold's on the China. Sounds good! it's all set now for busking season.

My first violin is a Cecilio Electric in blue. I've named him Shadrach, based on a dream I had that my best friend from the time I was born (I should mention he's a dog), who was hit and killed by a train when I was 9, was protecting me as a massive blue-black lion named Shadrach and had stars in his fur and the moon in his eyes.
I'm renting an acoustic violin I haven't bothered to name, but plan on turning in for ownership when I get my tax return. Love my local music store - all of the rental payments minus tax and insurance goes towards the price of a new violin. Hopefully I'll have a good enough ear in time to choose the right one. I'll let it give me it's name once we're ready.

I do not have my violin yet. I hope to order it within the next couple days and start my journey but I have long known that when I get a violin, one of the first things I will do as I learn my violin's sound and feel, is to name him/her. I absolutely feel like it will make my connection with the instrument stronger. Of course, I cannot name it until I get used to it.

....... I think that naming one is a lovely idea but nothing really fits so far. I just call it my violin. I'm just so proud to have one to call mine. Love the violin!
Sometimes, they have already have their own name - and one day - one day - while playing, and EVERYTHING just "works" - and when your violin is ready to be accept you as the player she'll divulge that information - and you'll hear a little whisper in your head - that's her name !!!!
When I re-strung my old Skylark which *I* had named "Herman" as a viola, the instrument just sounded so darned good (for what it is - a cheap old 1980's thing) I was playing and playing her for hours..... suddenly, while playing, the name "Violetta"entered my mind - that's it... - oh - I wrote about this before - hang on - here - https://fiddlerman.com/forum/l.....nt/#p87501
Anyway - that's just fun.... More seriously - take care with that arm, keep as relaxed as possible, avoid the "death-grip" and so on... you are going to love the journey !!!

Hey and thanks for the welcome BillyG! Maybe a name will come to me. You have great names for your instruments and you have a collection. I have a great beginner violin and am already wanting to move up a level. ? I wonder if this is common among those of us that love music. I bet that it is. The bad thing about a violin is that it's so easy to put in your car and cart it home...unlike a piano. ? That's a good thing as far as pianos go, at least.
Yeah, I have to see a doc about this muscle strain. I've been holding my violin so loose lately that it's hard to play. Anyway, I will just have to take my time and overcome. I can't stop playing! I know why it's called the Devil's Instrument now. ?

My violins names have been Violetta ( La Traviota sp?), Pinky, Gretta, Noelle, Rosie and Ming.
I Play with Ming now almost exclusively.
My grand daughters violins have names. Abby named hers Abby. Amelia named hers Hermione.
Cheers...
@admin super original. giggle.. ha ha just kidding...
Vibrato Desperato.... Desperately seeking vibrato

ROFL ! Just call it "The Boss" ( until he/she lets you know what his/her name really is --- you gotta play that instrument every day though for that to happen.... it needs to feel wanted....
