Opera is like classical with lyrics in a language no one understands.
Rap is like [Moderators note: Amazingly foul language and horrifying visual imagery censored] with a bad case of [Mod: My EYES! MY EYES!! It burns!! Make it stop!]
But that's just one man's opinion...

I like some opera. Some of it is great music.
Rap is by no means a favorite of mine as a genre, but some rap and hip-hop artists and their songs, I like.
I can't think of a single genre of music where I can't find at least some artists and songs I like. On the other hand, I can't think of any genre where it is guaranteed I will like everything in it, either. LOL
I would tend to agree with Kevin that Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar are opera, but some insist on classing that sort of work as "musicals".
I don't like all opera, but I definitely like some of it. There is some great music in opera.
So far as the lyrics being in a language nobody understands? LOL Well, to some people who speak other languages, it is probably just as plain as English. Not everybody on the planet speaks English or sings in it, but that isn't something I would care to judge music on the basis of. I mean, there *are* people living in Italy, Germany and etc who don't speak English either. One may not wish to learn other languages just to listen to opera, but there are explanations and translations in English that can allow one to at least understand the gist of the lyrics and enjoy the music in some sort of context.
We all have personal tastes, and some things just aren't going to be our cup of tea, as Barry said. But every time I have thought I disliked an entire genre of music, I eventually run into people that do it or are even just into it, and there end up being some pieces in that genre and sometimes some artists that I find I actually do like.

Overly broad, obviously-false generalizations are sometimes considered as much a basis for humor as sarcasm, or so I've been told.
Just sayin'
Although I'm no longer conversant, and my German has gotten as rusty and useful as a submarine's screen door from disuse*, I have have taken in many an Opera performance in that language. I've even managed to enjoy most of them. I'm sure the Italians, masters of opera themselves, consider German to be a foreign language, and probably wish "Der Fledermaus" was more Chianti and less Gewürztraminer.
(*I actually had anonymous shout-box user from Germany tell me that my German was "very bad." - )

I love Opera.Listen to this and let me know if you don't get moved.
NOPE...didn't do anything good for me... I last 14 seconds... had to shut it off..
Denny, it took a while for me to "get used to" and then finally like opera! LOL As in "a while," I mean over 25 years! I started listening to certain prog-metal groups who used operatic singers like Within Temptation and Nightwish and slowly moved up from there! I think even some of the soundtracks I listen to by 2 Steps From Hell now use opera singers!
Try this: "Somewhere" by Within Temptation (duet with Sharon den Adel & Anneke van Giersbergen)
Or this: "Our Solemn Hour" by Within Temptation

Ok, I'm weird. I liked at least some opera even from when I was a kid. The music teacher did a couple classes on opera when I was in 3rd grade where she had a record that explained some of what was going on and had musical excerpts from Bizet's Carmen while something called a "filmstrip" ran. Sort of like a slideshow projection, for those not old enough to remember filmstrips. The only thing I found annoying was that it was just bits of the songs.
I liked the music and found the story interesting, so I ended up talking my mom into signing out a record set of it with a sort of libretto from the library. I liked it. It wasn't the sort of thing usually listened to around the house when I was a kid, but I had my own record player.
After that, opera as well as classical music were some of what I kept an eye out for when hitting garage sales and second hand stores while growing up. Even really nice record sets often were going very cheap. Not saying I liked all of it, mind you, but I considered some of it great stuff.
