If you have any classical guitars on your wall, you'll have experienced spontaneous bass-string-snapping. A few weeks ago, something went twanggg, and I could see it was my mando out of the corner of my eye, so I went to see, and it wasn't a string. The G-string end of the nut had snapped off (I still haven't found it)! It was only an 80 dollar mando with a cheap plastic nut, and my arthritis prevents me from playing it, so farewell, mando!
