I am working in a song in my lessons. I forgot to ask my instructor about it last week. We were busy with other things. I have duplicated the notes, but not where they are on the staff. This is just what I am seeing as far as the particular notes are (quarter, half, eighth, etc) but not how they appear on the lines in the song. That does not really matter and I don’t want to copy it. So, if you play this it will probably be really bad. LOL

I do know the 2/4 means two beats per measure and the quarter gets one beat. I also know that where it changes to “C” that it is Common Time, 4 beats per measure and quarter gets one. I am having an issue counting the beats in some of the measures.

I am attaching a photo of what I am talking about. I hope the way I broke it up into red and blue text that is showing what I think is correct makes sense to you. I have the lines numbered #1, #2, #3 to make it easier for you to reference sections I have wrong.

The actual piece I am working on is Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise for cello written in tenor clef, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. I think I have it but not sure. I found a beautiful YouTube of it, but I couldn’t tell. I think I just kept listening for the pure enjoyment of it. A problem I have sometimes. I become the audience, not a student. I should find a youtube of it that is not quite so nice.

Just an FYI, this is not a cello question. I was just using the title in the sheet music. This is a question on reading the timing on sheet music. I was trying to think of “timing” last night but was in brain drain mode. I think it is referred to as timing more than beats?

It looks like you're doing this but using a line somewhere under melody draw in 16th notes on one line and use them to orient yourself on beats.

@ABitRusty I’m sorry. I have no idea what you are talking about. Could you explain?

I think you are talking about how I wrote this. I am actually not asking how to write it. I just need to make sure I have marked the notes right for the number of beats or the timing. These are note patterns in the song. They are just not the exact notes. I can’t copy the notes die to copyright. I just used the pattern of half, quarter, 8th and 16th that appears. I am having trouble counting as I play.

Do I have the timing or beats per note marked correctly? Am I counting right?

Thanks

Something like this.  Of course dynamics and the "feel" of the the tune are another thing.  Stuff like swing, how loud soft and such.  But as far as timing goes this is what I was meaning.  I think you're doing it right.

Oh, now I know what you were saying. Makes it clearer. Thank you very much.
