I found this video that really helps show what a Hemiola is, and the wonderful feeling you can get playing them!
The Hemiola (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment)
My theory: I believe a lot of fiddle tunes can be found played with Hemiolas, especially on improvised variations - even though they aren't found notated. Maybe they are taken for granted. This may be why I'm so drawn to the way some fiddlers interpret tunes over others... I need to keep a closer eye out to see if this is true... at least I'll keep this in mind as an option while playing my favorites. 🤗
GREAT discussion about Time Signatures that change, 'Crooked' Tunes, and Hemiolas in this thread:

@Jim Dunleavy -
I've thought about what you said.
Do you think this is just a matter of perspective? ...cause I find them very uplifting.
Or, possibly an uneasy feeling of not wanting to leave a more familiar rhythm?
Did you get a chance to watch the video?
🤔... geez, they seem like fun little wake-up calls to me 🌞 Good Morning!

@ELCBK I think they sound great.
What I mean by them causing havoc is that some players have trouble following their parts when the beats suddenly sound like they aren't in the 'right' place. This results in half the orchestra ending out of step with the other half (it's generally OK after a few goes though).
I won't say which half I'm usually in.

OMG!
THANK YOU FOR CATCHING THAT!
I won't make THAT mistake again! 🤣 I'll need to get help editing the topic title.
*edit: thanks to Mouse, it's fixed!
The weird part is I've been saying it correctly, but still kept writing it wrong!
...geez, you can always tell when I don't get enough sleep. 🥴
