Thought I'd share this app I've discovered during my Music Theory Course:

One thing you can do is create a tune and then embed it like a video--I created an example below:

 

You can even play with this example I've embedded on this post--changes are just in your browser (once you clear it from your browser, you'll see the original again).

Nifty little tool, & might be preferable to one of the full notation software things if you are working something out.  I've listed a YouTube video below that explains some of it; but if you just visit the site above & play with it, you can probably figure most of it out:
