Yes, I see that video now. Pekka is really great comedian! 😄

I don’t know that waltz from Vihti, which he plays in both of these videos. He didn’t say it has a special name, but maybe I can find it out if I do some searches.🤔

I had some waltz on my mind earlier today, which I should post here, but I can’t remember it anymore... I will get back to it when I remember it again.

About the Christmas, I love it! It’s so nice when you can bring the christmas tree in and listen to christmas songs all day long. There is one special radio channel where they play only christmas songs, I usually listen to it when I’m at work.
My Christmas will be perfect, if Santa could bring some new cello sheet music for me! 🤭

Can you print out some cello sheet music if Santa posts it here? (lol)

So, what sheet music would you like from Santa?

Oh, I didn’t notice that earlier!

I got Bach’s Cello suites and one book with Finnish cello pieces from Santa. 😊

I have played so much only classical music, that I would also have liked for example some film music. I was actually hoping sheet music for Schindler’s list main theme but maybe Santa didn’t had it...🤔
I like also those Celtic/Scottish/Irish tunes you have posted to another threads. 🤗 I’m not sure if Santa knows about those...

@Ilona -

Thank you SO MUCH!

That is a very beautiful waltz and it's going on my list to learn!

Maybe this will keep you busy for now?

You can download or print a free copy from here.

Schindler's List - Cello

Let me know of specific titles of any of the other tunes and I'll see what I can find.

Hope you have a Happy New Year!

@Ilona -

Did you find a copy of Schindler's List for Cello?  I fixed the original link. 😊

@Gordon Shumway -

I finally broke down and ordered a used copy of the book you suggested back up in Post No.16 - "A Little Couple - Dancemusik"  400 Waltzes, Polkas, Tangos, Hambos, Zwiefachers and other traditional dance tunes - transcribed, edited & chorded by Peter Barnes.

It arrived last evening & it's a HUGE book - glad it's spiral bound.

Haven't had a chance to go thru everything, but I really like what I've seen so far!

Some good Nordic music that I don't have and the Zwiefachers are very interesting with their changes between ²/₄ & ³/₄ time.

I don't want to completely get off topic here, but probably what surprised me the most was the large number of waltzes, from Venezuela!

Was excited to see "The Teddy Bear's Picnic", too.

Thank You for suggesting this book!

It's not really about breaking down, Emily, it's about waiting for one to become available at a sane price.

This pair of books has been recommended, possibly on vcom, can't remember, but it's too expensive for me, and I've already got other fiddle books.

Here's another GREAT Tutorial from Emelie Waldken - my kind of tune, from Skåne, Sweden

Vals efter Lasse i Lyby - Swedish melancholic waltz - Scandi Folk Tune

I've had this one book-marked fro some time - it's a Vals from Nils Olof Söderbäck & Peter Michaelsen, on their "Kvarnresan" (Journey to The Mill) - Rural Swedish Fiddle Music, album.

Enviken Vals in Dm

Enviken Vals in Gm - have a listen!

...some great polskor on this album, too!

I don't have a clue why I didn't transfer "Emma's Waltz" over to this thread earlier, but here it is now!

According to info on thesession.org - this tune is also known as "Muistoja Karpaateilta"!  I believe it's a Finnish waltz, or at least has Finnish origins.

I LOVE this tune!  There's sooo much that can be done with it, so maybe it's time I really try to 'get' the whole package. 😊

Here's my favorite version [for dynamics].  I can play the basic melody, but still working on some of the bowing to play like this -

Here is a version I think is very helpful for hearing bowing and ornamentation - by Russel McCumber & John Kirk.

It just amazes me, what harmony can come from just 2 instruments... with sympathetic strings!

This Vals is going on my short list.

"Baggbölebäckens Klagan Vals", composed by Åke Sandström - performed by Erik Rydvall and Olav Luksengard Mjelva (Hardangar Fiddle & Nyckelharpa).

Play this on Violin, Viola or Cello - you don't need a Hardangar Fiddle or Nyckelharpa to play this beautiful slow, AABB waltz in G minor!

Found pdf/printable sheet music for "Baggbölebäckens Klagan Vals"

I've been slacking off a bit here, but doesn't mean I haven't bookmarked some more beautiful waltzes from the Nordic Countries - just haven't had time to talk about them & find sheet music.

Here's a couple from Denmark!

OMG!  Think I just found the mother lode of the Danish Valse!

Kristian Bugge is a Danish Folk Fiddler who has a wonderful playlist from his "Weekly Wednesday Waltz" series!  FIFTY VIDEOS - MOSTLY DANISH, MANY WITH MORE THAN ONE WALTZ!  Kristian has also included GREAT info on each piece, in English - in the video descriptions.  The videos are not exclusively Danish, there is at least one Swedish & Norwegian Vals - "Dallas Stamper Waltz" is an Old Time tune from Missouri, there's a Venezuelan & one video is Irish waltzes for St. Patrick's Day!  I'll try to list all the Danish tunes separately, when I have time.

Weekly Wednesday Waltz - Kristian Bugge Playlist

Check out the Nordic Folk Tune Archives Thread - post 7, for Danish Folk sheet music!

Konsta Jylhä was an amazing Finnish Folk Fiddler!  Not sure if I mentioned him in one of the other Finnish threads, but he composed & played some beautiful Vals!

Here are a few of his compositions.  There's some ump-pa-pa in these. (lol)

D-duurivalssi

...haven't had a chance to look through my books for sheet music, yet.

Chris Haigh recently made a tutorial for "Hökpers Vals" - my favorite Swedish Vals!

Learn this lovely tune, then go back & take a look in the OP to see Mia Marine play it - you'll see/hear why I love it!

Still, really happy Chris provided this tutorial - check out his other lessons & books!

...yep, I'm getting REAL close to subscribing to Mia's lessons - maybe after Fiddle Hell!

Väsen is one of my favorite bands... needless to say, each member (Mikael Marin, Olov Johansson & Roger Tallroth) is a famous musician & here's a few of the beautiful Valser composed by them!

"Lilla Kulturbidragsvalsen" - another wonderful composition by Väsen's guitarist, Roger Tallroth!  I was happy to find an example of it bowed it (Koen Vanmeerbeek plays it on Nyckelharpa), because Väsen members usually just pluck this Vals!

I found it mesmerizing - played it today, by ear!

*edit! - found sheet music notation & midi for VIOLIN (treble clef, mandolin), even though I prefer the alto range of the nyckelharpa.  Lilla Kulturbidragsvalsen (Väsen) - Soundslice

I LOVE this "Alla ensammas lilla vals", composed by Mikael Marin - pretty sure he's playing his 5-string Viola with Octave strings!

Here's one by Olov Johansson - "Claras Vals"

One of Roger Tallroth's most covered tunes, "Josefin's dopvals" (aka Josephine’s Christening Waltz), link is to sheet music at thesession.org.

...so many more tunes to try! 😊

Thought it would be great to show a side-by-side comparison of how the emphasis on beats is different for a Swedish Vals vs. the Americanized Waltz.

Rickard Näslin is a Swedish Fiddler & Composer, but don't think he wrote this one.

Tim Rued plays this as an Old Time Waltz - very different feel with just a heavy 1st beat.

Have you heard this? ”Kesäillan valssi” = Summer evening waltz.

It’s composed by Oskar Merikanto and if somebody asked me to mention some famous Finnish waltz I would probably say just this. 😊

https://youtu.be/zsitlyC9cmI

The link is broke... so here's another video for "Kesäillan valssi"!

Video info from Violin Friends:

The original composition is made for piano with the name Grand Valse, and was later re-published with the Swedish name I Sommarkväll (1895).

@Ilona -

MISS YOU!

Hope your arm is better & you are back to playing the cello!

Don't know why I never shared the Finnish Valssi, "Metsäkukkia" in this thread, played here by Helmut Zacharias.

Here's a link to the notation & interesting info from The Traditional Tune Archive - "Metsäkukkia"!

I have discovered quite a few more Finnish waltzes that are wonderful, even a handful of more 'Wedding Waltzes' (Häävalssi)!

...there's more valissi!
