Hi All

This Saturday here in Australia we celebrate "Australia Day".

It's the anniversary of the arrival of 'The First Fleet' in Sydney Cove on the 26th of Janurary 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia (then known as New Holland).

A day of BBQs, going to the beach, and families getting together to celebrate the foundation of our nation

Thanks again Ferret.

In Far North Queensland we will not be dragging out the BBQ, it's probably floated away by now anyway.  I'm hoping I actually get the chance to leave the house and wear my flash new hat!

I don't care if I bust a gut, I'm going to learn to play Waltzing Matilda for Australia Day. aussie_flag

It's a bummer that the monsoon season had to kick in for this weekend. Stay dry and safe Robyn.

Calm down Ferret!  You won't do the crowd any good if you injure yourself to the point where you CAN'T play on Australia Day. :D

Take a while off an pick it up again later and don't hurt yourself....also drink a pint for me on Sat. would you!

cheers

Hi Dennis

I wasn't being totally serious. I've actually been having a great time.banana
The fingers aren't really that bad. They have gotten fairly tough over time.

I've been practicing for a while and then taking time off for coffee, etc.

It's starting to sound OK blink

Your country made my  national news, well Fox anyways cause of the rain and flooding. Happy Ausi Day!

Thanks @pfish

It's just a bit damp around here so far but they say it's heading south. It could get a bit 'damper' here soon. Who knows? So, in the meantime, I'll just keep violin-student

I hadn't heard Waltzing Mathilda for quite awhile so I refreshed my memory of it--definitely a lovely tune. So while we wait for John to post his official Aussie version of it, here's my version, hastily learned today. (I realize Australia Day is over now in Australia, but it's still the 26th here.)   :)

I want to apologize to John (Ferret). It could easily be assumed I had highjacked his thread with my posting of my version of the song. Plus you're assaulted with it playing automatically every time you open this thread (FM please fix this!). In hindsight I shouldn't have attached the song, just made reference that I was learning it, if I made any reference at all to it. And I definitely didn't intend the idea of highjacking the thread! I had forgotten that any sound file attached would automatically open whether you wanted to listen to it or not. So hopefully everyone who looks at this thread will read down to here and realize it's not John playing the song, just a Yankee imposter who happens to also like the song.     :)

The thought never crossed my mind. I don't feel 'high jacked' at all.

In fact I was pleased to see a 'Yankee' show enough interest to take the time to learn our 'unofficial ' national anthem. us-4240aussie_flag

I think that the reason that we don't use it as the official national anthem is because it about a guy that steals a sheep, jumps in a river, and dies. facepalm roflol
