YUMMY!
Apples, cider, boiled cider syrup (& donuts 😔) are big here in Michigan, too - if harvest hasn't already started, it should be any day now!
I was excited to recently find information on "The Lost Apple Project". I have fond memories growing up, of family & friends returning from Summer Cottages (in Michigan) with amazing apples that I never found sold at any orchards or stores! Why Apple Detectives are Tracking Down Lost Varieties.
We just got through making a bunch of Peach Cobbler & Crisp to freeze - after eating our fill of fresh, 'Red Haven' Peaches this last few weeks! BUT, I do LOVE a buttery streusel topping, too!
...LOVE apples any way they are cooked - my Dad used to enjoy a slice of extra sharp cheddar cheese on top of his hot apple pie & I like a little shredded added in when making the pastry crust.
I have a soft spot for MacIntosh - what apples did you use in YOUR 'Apple Streusel'?

@ELCBK Funny you mention the cheddar, my DAD, GRANdfather and on back all would never ever think of eating apple pie without cheddar. I , of course, use Macs mostly but most of the time, I mix it up with Cortlands. I am always, as you must have as a child and so many others our age, picking crabapples, or wild apples, and eating them. I will have Thomas try them but NOPE....he ain't having none of that, hahaha. If you scroll through my recipes on the food channel, link below, you will find some great recipes using apples as well as my blog, theyankeechef.blogspot.com. My official website is still down though.

I was thinking of some other Fall treats.
Just received a delivery of Black Walnuts and some dark Sorghum syrup!
I haven't had the pleasure of using Black Walnuts in baking for many years - they have a VERY distinct flavor I LOVE! When I was younger, it was more common to find them in cakes/breads, candies & ice cream. No one wanted to harvest the nuts that grew in my hometown neighborhood, because taking the outer husk off turned your fingers/hands black & the nut was hard to crack. I've never had the opportunity to try Black Walnut Syrup, which I've heard is delicious - or Birch Syrup, which is supposed to be very tart by contrast... but that's for Early Spring.
Sorghum Syrup wasn't commonly used in Michigan, but it was in Kansas - were I was stationed in the AF. I believe it's harvested late in the Summer(?) I like it's taste & it's so MUCH healthier than sugar or corn syrup - also can substitute for honey, molasses & maple syrup, but I like molasses for gingerbread.
Anyone else looking forward to something special that becomes available in Autumn?
