@doc-ivory -
I'm really sorry to hear that kind of news. 😞
Flying and taking care of any aircraft is really a very special world of experience - I consider myself very fortunate that the person I love most shared in some of my experiences, and I in his. Kevin still can't completely leave the aviation scene, works a couple days a week at Transit Alert - think he'd volunteer at our Air Museum if he couldn't do anything else.
Do you belong to any associations - can you become more active in other ways, at least stay in touch/keep up with news, or was flying strictly a solitary venture for you? Can you find a way to help youngsters enjoy what you have for so many years? Maybe volunteer to help someone restore an aircraft?
If you really do have to give it up, I hope you'll have a HUGE WAKE (with all your friends & family). CELEBRATE ALL YOUR GREAT MEMORIES and give it a proper send off, because I know it's a great loss. ...and you'll grieve.
...there could be many exciting things 'just around the corner' - you just haven't discovered them, yet.

It was and is a HUGE part of my life.
I do belong to the EAA and of course, AOPA.
If the doc gives me a thumbs down, I suppose I'll be down for a bit but as you say, there are other ways to participate in aviation.
I would miss those Stearman and Pipers Cubs though.
