In 1999 I had a fling with a film reviewer and, among about 2 dozen new releases, we saw a Roman Polanski/Johnny Depp movie called the 9th Gate. I don't remember it as being too bad, except that the ending was very Dennis Wheatley. I discovered it was made from a book called El Club Dumas, which I bought at the time. I just got around to starting it, and I looked up the movie in Rottentomatoes, where it is panned, and apparently Johnny Depp refuses to discuss it. Lol. So I ordered a cheap DVD to remind myself.

I discovered that an incunable/incunabulum is the technical term for a book printed before 1500 (Gutenberg invented movable type in 1439; Caxton took it to Britain in 1476). Guess the numbers we're talking about.

Did you guess 8 million? Mass production ain't new.

Probably my least favorite Johnny Depp film - definitely not as good as some other Roman Polanski films... not my idea of 'neo-noir'.

I've probably watched too many good, engaging & cleverly-executed suspenseful plots - this paled by comparison (imho)... hopefully, the book is better (wouldn't surprise me).

Think the film soundtrack was better than the film!  Wojciech Kilar was the composer ( also known for the music of Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula - 1992).
