I called Wildlife/DEC this morning. It looked like a bald eagle was hit by a car and little west of our house. I thought it was two skunks because of the black and white, and it looked like two, but, I could not smell anything. I got out the binoculars. There were a bunch of feathers around, what I thought were two birds, and feathers on the shoulder, and it looked like a bald eagle head. I still thought two. My husband went out and took a look. He said it was one bird that was hit so hard it split in two. He said it was either a bald eagle or goose, 🥴. Pretty sure it was not a goose, from what I saw of the head and feathers, it was a Bald Eagle.

I tried the local wildlife refuge, it probably lived there. They have Bald Eagle nests at that refuge. Beautiful to see. There was no number option to report anything like that, and you had to leave a msg. Was not going to do that. Looked at the county office options. Nothing. And with the county office building closed for the near future due to asbestos, they did not have any numbers you could call, really?

Then I called the sheriff, on their non-emergency number, after googling for a regional Wildlife or DEC and coming up empty, she said to call wildlife people. I asked her for a number and she gave me one.

I called them and gave them the info, my address so they could find it, etc. Then they forwarded it to a downstate main office. That office called and I gave them the same info and said I do not know if it is a bald eagle, but they do live in the nearby wildlife refuge, about 5 miles away.

I kept looking and saw no one picking it up. Then I looked and it was still there. 10 minutes later I looked and all of the eagle had been picked up, Then, the first guy I talked to, the number the Sherriff gave me, called me and asked if it had been picked up yet by the people I spoke to from the main office place. I told him that I believe they did and told him that I looked about a minute ago and it was completely gone, except a few feathers on the road shoulder. He thanked me. He was going to head out if it had not been picked up yet. He thanked me again for calling about it. Pretty sure it was a glorious bald eagle, from the head and wings I saw with the binoculars. It definitely was not a goose.

So, that was my morning.

If anyone sees anything like this, please report it. This was so sad to see. I do not know why the nearby wildlife reserve does not have a way to report it. That was sad to find out, too.

I have seen them fly to and from the reserve, but never low enough to be in danger of being hit by anything. Still bothers me.

There are local nonprofit groups that rescue or take in wild animals here.  state parks possibly to.  I think you reached out to the people I wouldve called if it happened here.

We always see large predator & scavenger birds in trees, waiting beside the expressways for roadkill - don't know how they get by without getting hit themselves.  Some accidents can't be avoided... still very sad.  If it wasn't an accident, wish whoever did it had been caught & held accountable. 😔

Great you got it cleared so other animals/birds don't go investigate & get hurt, too.

I also hope it was just an accident.  Where I live it is very rural and I often see turtles and other roadside casualties.  Last weekend we found a baby squirrel in the middle of the road (it's eyes were not yet opened) and luckily (after numerous calls) found a rescue about an hour away to take it.  It shouldn't be so difficult to report issues like this.  I think more people might take action if they didn't get tossed from phone number to phone number.
