I didn't think I would have to post to this topic/thread, but something interesting happened to me tonight @ 10:35pm. I was reading over the thread that Ferret started about the New Year's Eve song, "ALS". I YouTubed, "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" and was playing along with, Miss Ella Fitzgerald while she sang the song and listening to the POP sound from the Chatango chat box when I noticed my bow hair on my FM carbon fiber bow was loose. I proceeded to try and tighten it, but the more I twisted the nut that it got looser, then the tip of the bow dropped on the floor. It broke.

Anyway, I went back into my Fiddlershop account to see when I purchased the bow and noticed that it was, 17/10/2012. So the dd/mm/yyyy is the way Ferret said it should be.

Here is a photo of the bow.

I've got a carbon fiber bow, not a FM, but still. anyways, I've run the tip into the moving ceiling fan several times by accident while practicing and its still going strong!

Were you possibly twisting it the wrong direction?  They do twist all the way off if you are turning it towards loser and not tighter.

Ok, here we go. Evidently no one could open or bothered to open the photo link I posted.

@ Ferret: It didn't just fall off, John, it broke / snapped, the stick itself broke. Carbon fiber is supposed to be five (5) times stronger than steel, so there's no reason that should have happened.

@ Picklefish: I too have a ceiling fan in the living room, but I have a cathedral ceiling there, so I would need a bow 12' long in order to get tangled in the fan, (plus) I never use the fan in the middle of winter here in Michigan, lol wink. I know you said what you said about fan and the durability of carbon fiber using it as an example.

@ 1stimestar: Please don't take this wrong at what I am about to say, because people often take a typed sentence in the wrong manner, so PLEASE don't take this wrong, i'm not being a smart a$$, but I have been playing violin off and on for 66 years, I do know which way to turn the screw to loosen or tighten the bow hair.

Here's exactly what happened.

I was playing along with a song on "Youtube", I always check to make sure there is proper tension on my bow. I played about half the song, but the bow just didn't feel right, I could feel the stick touching the string's. I very seldom watch my bow so I didn't notice the hair as being loose. When I saw this, the thought instantly came to mind, '' did I forget to tighten the hair" , I knew I didn't forget that, I never do. I gave the screw one half twist and the hair's became looser, ( is looser a word? ) I gave another half twist and suddenly the tip/head fell to the floor.

I have or should I say I had five bow's that I alternate their use, switching bow's frequently in order to acquire the sound I'm looking for, ( depending on the song ) so it's not like this two month old carbon fiber bow get's all the use, in fact, it may get less use than the other four I have. One is a 130 year old Pernambuco bow, one is Brazilwood, which cost $225.00, twenty years ago, then I have a 15 year old $25.00 Glasser fiberglass bow and another wood bow that came with a cheap $90.00 violin that was bought about 8 years ago.

I guess it must be a defect in the carbon fiber. It shouldn't just break like that.  cry

I won't buy another.

Ken.

If it's any consolation, Ken - I understood you perfectly the first time. That must have been a heck of a song you were playing! I am now picturing you fiddling with a 12 ft bow in the middle of a snowy whirlwind, LOL.

As far as the date, I think the last time we all agreed was on 12/12/12 and we probably won't all agree again until 1 January 2101. By then, we will all be too old to argue about it!facepalm

Hahahha oh my goodness.  Yea my bad Buddy.  I guess I didn't even look to see who posted it.  Yea, typing replies in the middle of the night = not the best idea I've ever had.
