I ordered an electric violin to learn on after 4 years of wondering what it would be like to learn it. I'm hoping that this website is a good resource. Based on some lurking I think this looks like a great site with a helpful community.
I strive to play violin for Carnatic music, as inspired by L. Shenkar. Is there anyone else into this kind of thing? Ultimately I'm going to save some $$ and invest in a good quality 7 string electric violin to match some of the Raga phrases Shenkar gets on the low strings of his double violin.
And yes, this will probably take at least a decade to really master but I've been playing guitar for almost a decade and understand the level of dedication required... just the first night with the violin is going to sound so terrible!

Here is a link to a youtube video of L. Shankar. I could not figure out how to embed the video properly.

Seriously, just browse around youtube with a search for "L. Shankar" and you will find some really amazing stuff... I can sing along with it, so I figure that with enough technical practice I will someday be able to express the hauntingly beautiful phrases.

Welcome! Glad to have you here and you'll love it because it truly is the best resource for violin on the web. I wish you well on your journey. You will be surprised the very first time that it does NOT sound quite as bad as you expected. It's after the first week that it begins to sound really bad to your own ears because you expect more - lol.
Thanks for posting this - very interesting and beautiful.
