Ok so I was practicing the Addams Family sheet music on my keyboard and I realized I have issues with my ring finger and middle finger working independently of each other.
So I put my palm flat on the table and tried to see how high i could lift each finger at a time. I can barely lift my ring finger an inch high! I never noticed this before! Anyone else have this nuisance; if you do does it affect your fingering? For me it makes my fingers play the notes really close to each other, if that makes sense.
Oh and I was playing the keyboard because I just ordered my FM Concert violin earlier today!!

I am right handed so my right hand is more flexible, but I don't have any trouble doing what you are describing with my left hand. What I do have a huge amount of trouble doing is drumming my fingers from index to pinky. Pinky to index no problem.
Someone posted an exercise that I for sure can not do with either hand. I usually get a cramp in my forearm when I try it!!
1. Make a fist
2. Raise index and ring finger at the same time
3. Fold them back down
4. Raise middle finger and pinky
5 Repeat

Alright I think I figured it out. The way the tendons are laid out in your hand makes it difficult if not impossible to move it completely separately. I guess thats why its easier to roll your fingers pinky to index.
If you look at a picture of the tendons it makes sense. Thats why you cant lift your ring and index parallel to the floor from a fist (tried it, found that cramp you mentioned lol). Wanna try another test? Bend your middle finger and touch the middle knuckle to the table and keep the other fingers flat on the table, now try to lift your ring finger.

My left hand is the same way, the fingers can move independently much easier than my right, even though I am right handed. I noticed this when I was a little kid, and other kids in class would do the Spock "live long and prosper" sign with both hands, and I could only do it with my left. As any bored kid in school, I would sit there and work on my right hand to be able to do it, too, until I was finally able to, lol.

I can barely do the Vulcan salute with either hand lol. It takes me a good ten seconds before I can even half a** do it, you know where you make a 'W' instead of a 'V'. I guess the way the tendons overlap each other are tighter or positioned slightly differently in some people.

Speaking of the Vulcan salute here is a fancy way of doing it - cross index and ring finger and pinky and middle finger, I can do this with ease, both hands and no help from either hand!! Not sure how this would help my fiddle playing.
All these finger exercises, hope I don't get Popeye fingers!!!!!!!!!
