Crafting one's own violin bow.
Why I think it might have been done in baroque times.

The baroque bows that have been recovered are inconsistent in size and weight. I think that one reason for this, was not because they didn't have a standard, but because everyone personal needs are different.

We all have different strength, height and endurance. We all have different style of playing too, even they we seem to be forced to use a standard.

This idea about the perfect bow weight, length, makes me think of the idea of someone customizing all bows just for himself. By doing this it makes him the best player, because all the violin bows are just right for him. Not right for the other players, because they are not a perfect match to this personal.

I purchased some Chakte Vita wood, and plan on crafting myself a baroque bow. It will not have a tip, but will be cut for slit. It will have a frog, but the frog will be carved onto the stick. So it will be one piece. I will then take the horse hair and tie and glue knots on it, to adjust the tension. Just like I seen in a tutorial.

I then can adjust it's tuning by shaving it, so I will start thicker than it should be.

I am thinking for myself, about 25" to 26" long. I find a 29" bow too long for me, it makes me clumsy. A 29" bow must have been for taller person. I also can adjust the balance to my liking, allowing me more control.

What do you think about this idea? That baroque bows where hand crafted by the player? It was essential to playing the violin. Might also had been that many baroque bows, where carved green.

I have the $149 baroque bow from Shar, works great. It’s not particularly light -- ~ 58 grams -- but it is very agile and nicely balanced. The bow is not as evenly weighted as a Tourte-style bow, so it requires more attention from the frog to the tip. But it is also easier to shape tone with it than with the modern bow. It’s my fav.

I don’t think I’d want to invest the necessary time in building my own bow. Every hour spent building the bow would be an hour NOT spend learning to play. There’s also the question of the quality of wood -- I have no idea where to find or how to select the best snakewood.

Baroque bows were not crafted by the player.
