When i press my finger down on the D string, on any note, it sounds muffled and scratchy, and it's unpleasant to hear. I have no idea what make my violin strings are, because I am kinda a young beginner. However, for my piece, it alternates between the high and lower notes so playing my D string just feels too uncomfortable and it sounds dreadful! Any ideas? (Not sure if here is the right place to post this btw :/)

Hello and Welcome.

How old are the strings? My guess is that the D has gone flat.

I had this happen with a set of 3 month old Tonica strings, I replace then with Zyex strings and problem went away. You might try getting a set of Fiddlerman Strings to replace yours and the are great strings and low cost,

hope this helps you.. have a great day.

With violins there is no fretting over the music.

Thanks for your answer! I think my violin strings are about 4 years old... Got it off someone. I'll change it, so thanks for answering!

Try pressing harder. If the string doesn't touch the fingerboard you'll get a scratchy muffled sound.
