I just noticed something today while practicing! I have a ton of little "quirks" while playing my fiddle! For some odd reason, I started placing my tongue between my teeth when hitting notes on my E or G string!
On top of that, I have a tendency to pace EVERYWHERE when practicing! LOL I swear, if the door wasn't closed in my apartment, I'd be 2 blocks over!
I was wondering if anybody else had any little quirks when playing!

I have quirks also! Lol fun topic by the way. Mine is that I... *blush* I dance, I dunno it helps be count the correct beats. And when the violin is down and I'm trying to figure out the music sheet (is it called a partition in english also?), I sing aloud and move my finger and arms as if I was a maestro lol, one arm for the beat the other slaming down those notes.
Overall I look silly and my son laugh at me

Ha! I actually ......dance...... a little bit to! I'll actually dip into low notes as I play them!
And what's up with getting an itch on your nose when playing or recording?!?!? That's always happened to me!! Right smack dab in the middle of a solo or feature and BAM!! Nose itches...... With playing violin now, that could be dangerous with a bow in one hand!

This is a great thread, I think we all do. I remember seeing myself play a solo on TV with the Gavle Symphony Orchestra with a close up and my jaw was doing some real weird stuff.![]()
I'm still trying to figure out if that "evil, Cheshire Cat smile" in the middle of your Orange Blossom Special vid was intentional!
I was watching it today with my jaw on the ground and thought, "oh he's just mocking us now!" LOL Great stuff!

I really calm down when making a video because believe it or not I'm super shy lol. Maybe I'll just let the camera roll one day, no editing, so you can really laugh.
That's funny because I'm a really outgoing person but once I'm on camera, I freeze! LOL I'm just the opposite!
My wife just caught me in another little quirk that I thought I stopped years ago! I guess I still have a tendency to bite my bottom lip and nod my head to the beat while counting out long measures of rest! She use to make fun of me in high school because of it and I guess all these years later, I still do it!

You would think that players would more likely lock up with everything they have to remember! Posture, proper bowing, proper pressure, Finger position, Stroke direction, tempo, key, time signature, dynamics.......the list goes on and on!
It's amazing that we can digest all that and still put our emotions into what we're playing! And yet, we have so many little quirks that make things fun!

Awe! Have some fun with it!! Blame the cat like I do!
One thing I've learned from playing out with groups/bands is that everybody makes mistakes! And most times, nobody really notices them. (Unless you're competing!) The ones who do get noticed are the ones who completely stop at the point of their mistake. Just smile, or dance, and keep on playing!
We are our biggest critics! Would you rather be red in the face from frustration or from laughter?
